Policy Updates

Sandringham College regularly reviews and updates its school policies to ensure they reflect current best practice, align with our college values of excellence and integrity, and meet the requirements of the Department of Education.

A number of policies have recently been updated as part of this ongoing review process. Where policies are mandated by the Department of Education, the core content and wording is provided by the Department and then adapted to reflect the specific context, vision, and values of Sandringham College.

All current policies are available on the college website.

We value the voice of our school community. Parents, carers, and students are encouraged to share feedback on any of our policies. Feedback can be submitted directly to the College Principal via email amy.porter@education.vic.gov.au or through the college office.

Kids' Lit Quiz Australian Final in Sydney

On Monday 2 June, I had the pleasure of travelling to Sydney with four of our students to compete in the Australian National Final of the Kids' Lit Quiz — and what an experience it was.

The Kids' Lit Quiz is an international children's literature competition, often described as "the sport of reading." Teams of four students aged 10–14 compete across ten rounds of literary trivia, testing their knowledge of authors, characters, genres, and stories from across the world of children's and young adult literature. The competition runs in countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Indonesia, and the USA, with national finalists going on to compete at the World Final.

The students representing Sandringham College and Victoria at this year's national final were:

  • Oscar Randon – Year 8

  • Jack Anderson – Year 7

  • Edie Tardrew – Year 7

Held at the NSW State Library in Sydney, the final brought together 16 teams from across the country. As one of only two government schools in the competition, our students were up against predominantly independent and selective schools — and they did themselves proud, finishing 8th overall. It was a tremendous achievement and a testament to their passion for reading and their commitment to representing the college.

A very special thank you to parent Laura Anderson, who flew to Sydney to support the team. Her generosity and encouragement made a real difference to the students on the day.

Congratulations to Evie, Oscar, Jack, and Edie — you represented Sandringham College with excellence and integrity.

Student Medical Expenses including Ambulance Costs

Just a reminder to parents about the Department of Education policy regarding medical expenses.

Parents/carers are liable for all medical expenses incurred as a result of a student’s injury or medical need, including transport costs such as ambulance costs (this may include an air ambulance should that be considered necessary). Parents/carers should be aware that they may not be called if an ambulance is required until after the ambulance is called.

This applies unless the injury occurs as a result of a negligent act or omission on the part of the Department, its employees, servants or agents, in which case the Department will consider whether it is liable to reimburse the parents for expenses reasonably incurred.

Sandringham College encourages parents/carers to review the need for up-to-date ambulance cover and medical insurance.
