Congratulations to all students who entered the Bayside Council Ellen Jose Reconciliation Week Awards Jersey Design Competition this year. I was incredibly proud of the high standard of entries submitted in response to the theme:
“As a young person, what does reconciliation mean to you?”
This year saw the highest number of entries in the competition’s history, with more than 230 entries received overall. It was wonderful to see so many students thoughtfully engaging with such an important topic and communicating their ideas through design.
We were especially thrilled to have two prize winners from Sandringham College:
🥈 Nadia Bessard (Year 7) – 2nd Place
🥉Jessica Aldous (Year 8) – 3rd Place
I had the pleasure of attending the awards ceremony on Saturday 23 May and witnessing the recognition of these outstanding achievements. Congratulations to Nadia and Jess on their success, and thank you again to all students who entered the competition. The winning and shortlisted works remain on display at Bayside Council.
Term 2 has been a busy and exciting term across the Arts, Design and Technology Domain, with students participating in a wide range of excursions and learning experiences designed to connect classroom learning with the real world.
Throughout the term, students have visited:
Art galleries and museums
VCE Season of Excellence exhibitions
Photography walks in both the local area and Melbourne CBD
Industry and design-focused learning experiences
While these opportunities require significant planning and organisation from staff, we firmly believe the value they provide for student learning, inspiration and engagement is well worth the effort. These experiences allow students to see how the knowledge and skills they develop in the classroom are applied in authentic contexts.
Our Art Academy students have continued exploring the exciting medium of printmaking this term through a series of workshops with visiting artist and screen printer Keren Hasson from Troppo Prints who is an illustrator, printmaker, and graduate of Parsons School of Design, from Brooklyn, New York.
Over three sessions, students were introduced to a range of printmaking techniques including:
Monoprinting
Screen printing
Hand-cut stencil screen printing
Students had the opportunity to learn directly from a practising artist, experiment with new processes and develop their understanding of contemporary printmaking techniques. The workshops were engaging, creative and a lot of fun, with students producing some fantastic work along the way.
Be sure to check out the photo gallery to see some of the amazing prints and students in action!

A reminder to all students that entries are now open for the Sandibald Portrait Competition.
Students from Years 7–12 are encouraged to enter and showcase their creativity through portraiture. Entries can be completed in a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, photography, digital art, mixed media and sculpture.
Entries close in Week 1 of Term 3.
Whether you are an experienced artist or simply enjoy being creative, we encourage everyone to get involved and earn valuable House Points for Sandibald.
We can't wait to see your entries!
