A Message from David & Cam

It's hard to believe we are already approaching the halfway point of the school year! As the colder weather starts to set in, our school remains a busy place, with students continuing to learn, grow and challenge themselves every day. It has been wonderful to see the progress our students have made throughout the first half of the year, and I would like to thank our staff, students and families for their ongoing contribution to making our school such a positive and supportive community.

Reports & Parent Teacher Conferences

I would like to provide families with an update regarding Semester 1 student reports.

Semester 1 reports will be distributed as planned on Monday 22nd June. Reports will include student achievement against the Victorian Curriculum, however full written comments will not be included this semester due to the earlier industrial action.

This change is a result of recent industrial action related to negotiations for the Victorian Government Schools Agreement. While an in-principle agreement has now been reached and industrial action has been suspended, the timing of these changes has meant that many schools, including Altona Green, have been unable to complete written comments this semester.

We know that written comments are valued by families and staff alike. However, asking teachers to complete this significant additional workload so late in the term would not be reasonable. Supporting staff wellbeing and maintaining sustainable workloads remains important.

To ensure families still have the opportunity to discuss their child's progress, we will be holding Parent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday 23 June and Wednesday 24 June. These meetings will provide an opportunity to celebrate successes, discuss areas for growth and talk about next steps in learning.

Please book your Parent/Teacher Conference time via Compass.

TRP & Basketball Australia Visit

On the 22nd May our Grade 3 to Grade 6 students had the wonderful opportunity to hear about TRP pillars of Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness from Tasmanian Jackjumper and Australian basketballer Will Magnay. It was a very engaging session and the students (and some teachers!) were very excited to meet such a high-level sportsman.

Will and the team from TRP and Basketball Australia were very impressed by the behaviour and positive interactions demonstrated by our students. Thank you to Kylie for arranging this important session for our kids!

  • Wednesday 17th - Prep
  • Thursday 18th - Year 3
  • Friday 19th - Year 2

Recent Excursions/Incursions

Scienceworks

Our Grade 2 students have been learning about the Solar System and to support this learning, last week they visited Scienceworks. They had a fantastic day and the Planetarium was certainly a highlight! This excursion provides a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding through hands-on and immersive learning experiences. Our teachers were thrilled with the behaviour and a great day was had by everyone!

Mrs Sargood

Our Grade 1 students have been learning about history through their Inquiry unit 'Then and Now'. To support their learning in this topic, last week they enjoyed the incursion featuring Mrs Sargood, who gave them a taste of school life in the 1870s. Students participated in hands-on activities and gained an insight into how learning, behaviour and classroom environments have changed over time, helping them to better understand and appreciate life in the past.

Werribee Open Range Zoo

To support the Grade 4/5 Unit on Adaptations, our students visited the Werribee Open Range Zoo on 3rd June. Students enjoyed seeing a variety of animals and learning about the different ways they have adapted to survive in their environments. The excursion brought their classroom learning to life and gave students the opportunity to make real-world connections to what they have been studying. It was a fun and engaging day for all involved.

Pupil Free Day Reminder

A reminder that tomorrow is a pupil free day. As part of the Victorian Government Schools Agreement, all teachers are eligible for 1 Professional Practice Day in 2026. These days are allocated to enable teachers to focus on the improved delivery of high quality teaching and learning.

In consultation with the staff and the school council, we have allocated the professional practice day as a pupil free day. Teachers will be working on areas such as planning, assessment and reporting. TeamKids will be available for all day care on this day.

Health and Safety Reminder - Student Illness

It is well and truly the cold and flu season and we are experiencing a number of colds and viruses that are impacting many members of our school community. To help protect our school and the wider community, we ask that unwell students stay home, given the impacts of flu and colds on our school community.

To help reduce the spread of flu, colds and viruses, we encourage students to:

  • wash and sanitise their hands regularly

  • avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

  • cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze

  • if unwell, stay at home until their symptoms pass.

Face masks are available in all schools and can be worn by any staff or students who wish to do so.

We thank you for your support with this.
