Are You OK? Day – A Little Question Can Make a Big Difference
Are you OK? It’s a simple question, but sometimes it can mean so much.
This September, our school community is taking time to recognise Are You OK? Day and remind ourselves that looking after our wellbeing is something we can all do, every day.
Sometimes we might feel happy, excited and confident. Other times we might feel worried, lonely, frustrated, tired or just a little bit “off”. All of these feelings are normal, and it’s important to know that we don’t have to manage difficult feelings on our own.
Start with a simple question
Asking someone “Are you OK?” is a wonderful way to show that we care. It might be a friend who seems quieter than usual, someone who is sitting by themselves, or a family member who doesn't seem quite like themselves.
If someone says they’re not OK, we don’t need to have all the answers. We can:
- Listen – give them our attention and let them talk.
- Be kind – show them that we care and that their feelings matter.
- Encourage them to get help – let a trusted adult know if someone needs extra support.
- Keep checking in – sometimes one conversation isn't enough.
Looking after our own wellbeing
Are You OK? Day is also a great reminder to check in with ourselves.
We can support our own wellbeing by getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, moving our bodies, spending time with people we care about, enjoying activities we love and talking to a trusted adult when something is worrying us.
At school, there are always people who are ready to listen and help. Remember: asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
One question can make a difference
This week, we encourage everyone in our school community to look around, notice how others are going and make time for a genuine check-in.
You never know when a small act of kindness or a simple “Are you OK?” might make someone's day a little brighter.
Be kind. Check in. Listen. And remember – you are never alone.
