Headstart

Head Start supports students to complete Year 12, while also learning real-life skills that employers need through an apprenticeship or traineeship. The program helps give students a valuable head start in their career.

Every young person is different. To give each student the best chance of success, Head Start Coordinators work closely with schools to create a flexible timetable and pathway that suits each individual student.

Celebrating Head Start student Holly Day

Working out what you want to do when you leave school can be daunting. Holly wanted to explore the options she might have after leaving Naranga but wasn’t sure where to begin.

After discussions with her teachers, Holly expressed a strong interest in working with children. Holly had already chosen childcare as one of her electives and had undertaken two placements in childcare, where she had impressed her coworkers and employers.

The Head Start team worked with Holly and the Naranga team to find an employer and Holly began her traineeship in in the childcare industry in December 2023.

In Holly’s own words, here’s a snapshot of how she’s going so far:

What’s your favourite thing about your work?

I get to have input into the daily childcare activities. I enjoy the sensory parts of the play doh activities and shaving cream activities. It also allows me to show my creativity.

What are some of the things you do during the day when you’re at work?

I assist with sleep routines, daily activities and help with snacks and healthy eating. This includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch.

What new skills have you learnt?

I have learnt how to interact with the children better and I have felt my communication has improved.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome? Talking to adult staff and asking for help.
