NEW BIN LABELS COMING

This week our Pathways Sustainability students visited the different locations in the yard where bins are provided for rubbish collection. Students are generally remembering to put their rubbish in the bin but sometimes we are finding waste mixed up instead of properly sorted.

The students have laminated visuals to help all students make better choices to sort their rubbish instead of putting it all into the red bins for landfill. Green bins are ideal for banana peels, apple cores and vegetable scraps. The cone situated in the garden in front of the staffroom is for all food scraps that can’t be composted. Two council recycling bins outside the staffroom are ideal for cardboard, paper, tin, and hard plastic. Four yellow bins situated behind the main building are just for cardboard and paper collections each fortnight by Cleanaway recycling.

More of our classes have food scrap bins in classrooms so students can make a conscious effort to use them during lunchtimes. Nude food days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. We are noticing more students coming to school with their food in containers to reduce excess waste.

Students will soon be recording the amount of waste in classes before and during Nude Food days to see if we as a school are reducing our waste. Food in wrappers can be emptied into containers and zip loc bags taken home and reused if clean enough.

Families living in the Frankston area can collect a Food Caddy Waste bin from their local council. This bin comes with a six-month supply of compostable bin liners. Pictures of acceptable food waste items for example, fruit, eggshells and dairy products appear on the liner bag so you know that only these items can go into your green waste bin. It is a great way to minimize waste. If you live in another area, contact your council to find out if this                                                         service is available to you.

LIDS FOR KIDS RECYCLING PROGRAM

Students in the lunchtime sustainability group participate in recycling projects. They sort lids according to size and colour. We are collecting a lot of lids in our house colours. If you are donating lids, please make sure the lids are clean, so we do not have any contamination issues when we bag and send them off to the recycling hubs.
