Managing Student transition at Old Orchard Primary School
Parents would be familiar with the transition program organised as our kinder students enter school for the first time. We set up our students for success with gradual introductions and exposure to the school environment. We are also really aware that our current students also need time, space and some structure to assist them in feeling comfortable with a transition to a new year level. As a school we set up a number of activities and opportunities that help support our students. The junior school begins their preparation for transition much earlier in the year than you might think. They begin with mixing class groups from time to time to expose students to new potential friendships and different dynamics. During sessions such as these our students also get the chance to get to know teachers other than their own a bit better. The ongoing kitchen garden program in the year 3/4s also serves this purpose.
Class teachers will have been discussing student friendship lists with students. The focus of these discussions is on assisting students to identify who might make a good learning friend and not just students writing down their best outside break time friends. Each student will have the opportunity to develop a friendship list of names they would like to be in a class with in 2027. In most circumstances students will have at least one friend from their list in their class next year.
Tuesday 8th December - Whole school transition session -(Prep - Year 5 students) 9:15 - 10:45am.
Students will spend time in classrooms of the year level above to become more comfortable and familiar with the space and other teachers. Students will not be in their 2027 class groupings on this day.
Tuesday 15th December - 2027 Internal transition session - (Prep - Year 5 students) 12:50 - 1:50pm
Students will move to their 2027 allocated classroom in their 2027 allocated class and, where possible, will spend the session with their 2027 teacher.
