Book Week 2026
Book Week Celebrations: A Week of Storytelling and Fun!
Our students and staff have come together for another wonderful Book Week, celebrating the joy of reading and the power of stories. Each day has been filled with creativity, curiosity, and laughter—here’s a look at our exciting activities!
Monday kicked off with students bringing in their favourite illustration or picture from a book, keeping the image a secret until sharing time. We also played a game where everyone had to try and guess which image was everyones' favourite. It proved much harder than many imagined!! This sparked lots of anticipation and thoughtful conversations about the power of images in storytelling.
Tuesday was all about sharing: students brought in their treasured books and shared 2–3 reasons why they love them. It was inspiring to hear the variety of titles and personal connections formed with books!
On Wednesday, we were meant to have a “Guess the Author” quiz but we didn't seem to find the time for this challenge. Instead we were too busy reading lots of the student's favourite books from yesterday.
Thursday saw the classroom transformed with costumes as students and some staff dressed up as their favourite book characters. From classic heroes to new favourites, the creativity on display was outstanding.
Finally, on Friday, students brought props or objects related to a book—but kept them shrouded in mystery! Using clues, classmates tried to guess the book before the big reveal, wrapping up the week with excitement and teamwork.
Book Week has been a fantastic celebration of reading, imagination, and community. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped create such memorable experiences. We look forward to next year’s adventures in books!
Green Thumbs & Cooking Crew
Rhubarb Muffins 21/08/2026 - Green Thumbs Gardening & Cooking Crew: From Garden to Plate at Niangala Public School
There’s a spring in the step of Niangala Public School’s Green Thumbs gardening and cooking crew as they prepare the school garden for a new season of growth and learning. Recently, the students rolled up their sleeves for a busy, hands-on session that showcased both their gardening and cooking skills.
The class began with the crew tackling the compost bin, turning over rich, organic material that will nourish the soil for future plantings. With teamwork and enthusiasm, they removed finished winter crops—making way for fresh, vibrant spring growth.
But the highlight of the day came when the crew harvested luscious stalks of rhubarb from their own garden beds. After carefully cleaning and chopping their home-grown produce, the budding cooks whipped up delicious batches of rhubarb muffins. These tasty treats were enjoyed by both the students and staff, serving as a fantastic reminder of the rewards of growing and preparing your own food.
As the garden beds are readied for spring planting, the Green Thumbs team is looking forward to sowing new seeds, cultivating young plants, and continuing their journey in sustainability and healthy eating. Their efforts not only brighten the school, but also strengthen community spirit and provide valuable lessons about food, teamwork, and the wonders of nature.

Kids Teach Kids lessons
Mr Harry - Discovering Fossils
Mr Harry delighted his students this week with a lesson on how we can discover fossils. Harry was very prepared for his lesson, he provided us with a strong introduction and information that we needed to participate in his very organised activity of finding fossils. We learnt about the tools we need and how to carefully pull the fossils apart to discover the secrets within. We also learnt that a 12 year old girl has even discovered the skeleton of a dinosaur before. Mr Harry had prepared with the help of his assistant an opportunity for each of us to break away some 'rock' to discover dinosaur remains within. Some discovered footprints and even an arm of a dinosaur was among the fossils.
Miss Elsie - Jui jitsu
There were plenty of laughs and looks of shock horror as Miss Elsie taught us some self defense moves in Jui jitsu. We had a brief lesson on the history of Jui jitsu, the different levels you can move through, the jacket and belt that you wear and some of the self defense moves modelled for us before we tried the moves ourselves. I for one, was a little astounded when Harry had me pinned on the ground in just a few simple moves! Miss Elsie also made us all medals and was very inclusive of everyone in her lesson. It was lots of fun and we all learnt a new skill!
