Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘v’, ‘y’, and ‘x’. Students have been practising blending these sounds to read words such as box, van and yes. In Writing, we have been constructing short, simple sentences based on stories we have listened to in class. Students have been recalling facts from informative texts.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been learning about measurement. Students have been predicting the length and height of different objects and distances and measuring these items using informal units of measurement. Students have been comparing different objects to identify which is taller/longer and which is shorter.

Religion

In Religion, our focus has been 'Let’s Celebrate Creation'. Students have been exploring all of the beauty in God’s creation. We have been creating creatures such as birds, fish and plants using different art techniques. We have also been practising our Assembly Prayer which will be in week 7.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we have been learning about Visual Arts. Students have explored the importance of colour in artwork and how colours can be used to express different emotions and feelings. We have been investigating a range of visual art techniques and explore how visual art is expressed across different cultures.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Read a story with someone at home. Talk about what happened at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the story.
Practise writing all your letters using lower case letter formation.
Compare the height of two objects at home. Identify which is shorter and which is taller.
Write the below sentences independently:

The quick van can go down the hill.
The vet will feed the fish.
Can you tell the boss to be quick?
The hens sat in the sun.

Or create your own sentence.

Ensure your sentence begins with a capital letter, ends with a full stop and has spaces between your words.

Look, say, cover, write and check the below words. Said, that, this, they, here, and was.

Year 1 News

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been learning to spell using 'ear' and 'eer'. We have been practicing the tricky words didn't, can't and don't.

In Numeracy, students have been learning about patterns. We have used hands on materials to practice making different patterns. We have practiced skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.

Religion

In Religion, our topic is Let's care for creation. We have been learning about how we can care for people, pets and our homes.

Inquiry

In Inquiry our topic is 'Visual Arts'. Students have been exploring a variety of art techniques from different cultures, gaining an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and creative expression.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

Find words in your take home reader with the sound 'eer' and 'ear'.
Practice putting the tricky words, can't, don't and didn't into sentences.
Listen to your child read their reader each night.

Year 2 News

Literacy

In Literacy, during spelling, students have been learning that the letter c can make the /s/ sound when followed by e, i or y (e.g. cent, city, cycle), and that the letter g can make the /j/ sound when followed by e, i or y (e.g. gem, giant, gym). They have also been practising these spelling patterns in their reading and writing. Tricky words we have been focusing on include remember, minutes, great and these.

Grammar

During grammar lessons, students have been revising nouns, pronouns, adjectives and noun groups. They have been learning how these parts of speech work together to make writing more detailed and interesting. For example, nouns name people, places or things (dog, school), pronouns replace nouns (he, she, they), adjectives describe nouns (happy, large), and noun groups combine these features to provide more detail (the happy dog, a large red ball).

Comprehension

During comprehension, students have been learning how to summarise texts. They are practising finding the most important information and retelling it in their own words. To help them do this, students use who, what, where, when & why questions to decide what is important and create a short summary of what they have read.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have started learning about multiplication and division. They have been using the doubling strategy to solve multiplication problems, for example, knowing that double 6 is 12. Students are building confidence in using efficient strategies to solve number problems.

Religion

In Religion, we have started learning about Creation. We are discovering how God created the world and how we can be responsible caretakers of people, animals, and the environment.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our topic is Visual Arts. Students have been exploring art techniques from different cultures and recently used oil pastels to create their own artworks. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm throughout this engaging topic.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

Literacy

Use one or more of the tricky words (through, every, only, surprise, where, and there) to write a sentence.
Listen to your child read their reader each night. When reading, students could practice using the ‘summarising’ strategy to retell what the text is about.

Numeracy

Can you find 3 groups of 2 objects? How many objects do you have altogether?
Can you make 4 equal groups with items from around your home? How many are in each group?
If you double 5, what do you get? Can you use objects to show your thinking?
Can you find something and make 2 equal groups? How many items are in each group and how many altogether?

Year 3 News

Literacy

In Literacy, students are finishing and publishing their information reports on Iron. It has been wonderful to see students bring together their research and learning to create informative and well-structured pieces of writing.

We are also beginning our new class novel, The One and Only Ivan. This text will introduce our new writing focus of persuasive writing, where students will learn how to express an opinion, provide convincing reasons and use persuasive language to influence their audience.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we are finishing our Multiplication and Division unit. Students have been developing their ability to break down and understand worded problems, identify the important information and determine whether multiplication or division is needed to solve the problem.

Next week, we will begin our new focus on Time.

Science

In Science, we have had an amazing time exploring solids and liquids through a range of hands-on experiments. Students have investigated how materials can change state, including making butter from cream for fairy bread and melting chocolate to make s'mores. These experiments have been a fun and engaging way for students to observe changes in materials firsthand.

Some homework activities could include:

Persuasive Challenge:

Choose something you would like to change at home (e.g. a later bedtime or choosing dinner). Write three reasons to convince an adult!

Multiplication or Division:

Create 3 multiplication or division worded problems using situations around the house. Solve each problem and explain how you worked it out.

Times Table Challenge:

Spend 10 minutes practising the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables using flashcards or quick-fire questions.

Solid or Liquid Hunt:

Find 5 solids and 5 liquids around your home. Choose two and explain what might happen if they were heated or cooled.

Kitchen Science:

With an adult, find an example of a material changing from a solid to a liquid or a liquid to a solid. Discuss what caused the change.

Reading Fluency:

Read a familiar text three times. First for accuracy, second for smoothness and third using expression and appropriate pauses.

Handwriting Practice:

Spend 10 minutes practising neat, joined handwriting, focusing on consistent letter size and spacing.

What's been happening in Year Five you may ask?

We went on an excursion – and boy did we have fun. It was a long day, but we packed so much in.

The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) has been the home of football since 1859 and was the birthplace of Test Cricket in 1877 and one-day international cricket in 1971. It was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 commonwealth games. But the MCG, as it is affectionately known to locals, is so much more than Australia’s biggest sporting stadium. Apart from football, it has also been used as a concert venue for bigger artists such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran for use of more capacity which has carried up to 100,000 people, with the estimated maximum amount of people being 130,000! The MCG is more than just a stadium, it’s a second family for any football player coming from teams like Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, Essendon and so many more teams!

On Friday we went to the MCG for an excursion. We woke up early to leave at 7am. I sat next to Sienna the whole time and we got to watch a movie.

We went to Science Works for two hours then moved on to the MCG.

At science works we walked around the pumping station which was the heart of Melbourne’s sewage. Then we went to watch the lightning show. It was so cool. We learnt about energy, sound, and light. Did you know? That lightning hits the biggest object, so make sure to have a shelter during a storm.

The MCC was found in 1838 by five brothers.

The MCC always has been the foremost promoter of sport in Australia.

Baseball match was played at the ground /MCC/MCG.

MCG steepened in a rich history established in 1853 less than 20 years after Melbourne was found.

The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) held many sports such as Victorian football cricket, baseball, rugby and soccer, and the 2006 Commonwealth games. And many others The MCG is locates in Yarra Park and was first made in the middle of a train track, so they had to demolish it and build it again in 1853 to this day the MCG has the 10th most seats in the world at a stadium with 100,024 seats.

On Friday we went to Science Works and the MCG. At Science works we went to a show about lighting and then after that we went into the museum, and I raced Cathy Freeman and got to use little robots that spun around and had blowers on them which blew the sand around.

After our time at Science Works, we got back on the bus, and it drove us to the MCG. It felt like it took ages to get to the MCG. When we arrived, we got off the bus and ate lunch and then got into our classes to begin our tour of the MCG.

Our tour guides name was Geoff, firstly he walked us down to the oval and told us that many famous singers have sung on the ground. He then walked us into the players room and into the room where they have their meetings before and during the games. After this we made our way into the media room where the coaches talk to the reporters.

Towards the end of the tour Geoff took us up lift to level 4, which was the highest level of seating. He told us about the one red chair in the stadium, which was hit when an Australian cricketer hit the ball all the way up to level 4. To this day it is the furthest anyone has hit the ball.

Once the tour ended, we were all split into groups to go into the sports museum. We did rock climbing and threw netballs into the hoops. At the start of the museum we got given wristbands that allowed us to scan machines which gave us facts about Football and Cricket.
