Weekly Values Focus

This week's values focus:
Week 5: Footscray West students include others
At our school, we include others. We can do this by allowing people to join in with our groups – whether we are learning in class, playing in the yard, taking part in a game, or just having a conversation with friends. It feels good to belong, and we can be the person who makes that happen for someone else.
Including others can be simple: say “Yes, you can play,” make space in your circle, or ask someone nearby if they’d like to join in. If you notice someone on their own, you could invite them to be part of your group or activity. Think about how you would feel if you wanted to join in – it’s kind to give others that chance too.
Being included is something we all have a part in. Sometimes we need to take a brave step and use our voice to ask politely if we can join in. Being included also means showing others that we are ready to be part of the group by trying our best, following the rules, and being someone others can rely on. These choices help us build trust and feel confident, even when joining in feels a little challenging.
Being included as part of a group often means compromising. This might look like playing a game someone else chooses, trying something a different way, or waiting patiently for your turn.
Sometimes others may invite you to join, but you might feel like sitting out — and that’s okay too. When this happens, it’s important to say no kindly and with gratitude, so others still feel respected and valued.
This week, look for moments where you can include someone. Could you ask a classmate to work with you? Could you open up a spot in your game? Could you bring someone into your conversation? Small choices like these make a big difference.
