Term 1 in Year 6

It has been a busy and productive start to the year in Grade 6, with students engaging enthusiastically across all learning areas and well engaged in sporting opportunities available for our senior school students.

Mathematics

Our mathematics focus has centred on building strong number foundations and problem-solving skills. Students are participating in daily fluency practice to develop automatic recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10. We have been consolidating our understanding of factors and multiples, using these concepts to simplify calculations efficiently. Students have also been introduced to the rules of Order of Operations, learning how to correctly evaluate expressions involving multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

In addition, we have been exploring the important link between multiplication and area, developing data skills by finding the range and mode of data sets, and interpreting various data representations. Students are also strengthening their understanding of fractions by comparing, ordering, and identifying equivalent fractions, while reviewing decimals up to thousandths.

Literacy

In reading, students are studying A Ghost in My Suitcase, with rich discussions connecting to themes of family heritage and identity. A strong emphasis has been placed on building reading fluency and comprehension strategies, as well as developing their vocabulary.

We began the year with persuasive writing, where students crafted thoughtful pieces about changes they would like to see in the classroom, school or wider community. Our focus has now shifted to narrative writing. Linking with our World Geography unit, students will develop a geographical narrative inspired by a country in the Asia-Pacific region. Students are working on expanding their writing through the use of varied sentence structures, including compound and complex sentences, appositives and sentence expansion techniques.

Students are using the Typing Club program to build stamina and confidence when typing. This is an essential lifelong skill that will support their transition to high school. Spelling Mastery lessons continue to be taught based on student need and prior assessment data.

Knowledge Unit - World Geography

Students are developing their global understanding by identifying continents, locating major countries and examining key characteristics such as; climate, rivers, vegetation, population density, languages and religions. A particular focus is being placed on the geographical diversity of the Asia-Pacific region. Students will also explore the world’s major religions and learn about Indigenous Peoples across different countries.

Homework

Homework expectations include:

• Daily reading

• Essential Assessment: 1 literacy task and 2 numeracy tasks

Due dates will be communicated by your child’s classroom teacher.

Sport

During our Sport program on Fridays, students have been involved in Cross Country training in preparation for the school trials in a couple of weeks. Later this term, our Grade 6's will begin trialling the sports that are part of our Interschool Sport competition. These are: AFL football, Tee-ball, Netball and Soccer. They will then put in their preferences before teams are chosen.

We look forward to another engaging and successful term of learning and school activities.
