Winter Wellbeing Ideas
Our wellbeing and mood is influenced by many things, personal challenges, world events, daily activities, relationships, diet, exercise and much more. The weather can also play a huge part in our mood. Ever noticed feeling down on a rainy day? Find it harder to get out of bed in the cold? This is a common experience, and with winter just starting, we thought it might be helpful to share some suggestions on ways to help manage our wellbeing during the colder months.
Wellbeing tips for the winter weather
Connect with others - Spending more time indoors shouldn’t mean disconnecting from our friends and family. Plan some activities with your loved ones, boost your mood with social activities, improve sleep and overall quality of life.
Offline time - Set some screen time limits and try some alternative activities such as reading, cooking, puzzles of indoor exercises.
Outdoor time - Be deliberate about getting outdoors and spend time in the fresh air, weather appropriate of course. Use mindfulness to tune into your senses and notice how you feel.
Light each day - Sunlight has significant benefits on sleep, mood, and overall health. Make some time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, especially if there are only small doses.
Move your body - When you need to stay indoors sometimes you need to get creative, try an online dance class, join a local gym, join an indoor sporting team or get on the floor and play with your kids. Regular movement improves mood and should always remain a priority.
Open Up - Don’t be afraid to talk to someone about how you are feeling, especially when these winter months can get you down. You never know, they may be feeling the same way.
Daily Routine - Be intentional about your time and your daily routine, it may have to change slightly but ensuring you are still able to fit in the things that bring you joy are crucial in these darker months.
Feel free to try even just a few of these tips and take the time to notice any impacts within your mood and overall wellbeing.
