Our Year Ones are scientists! Our big question in science this term is:

How do weather and the seasons change the

world around us?

The children have begun by exploring how meteorologists measure the weather, and by becoming meteorologists themselves! We have been filling in a daily weather chart with symbols to record the weather and notice weather patterns. We’ve made wind vanes to measure which direction the wind is blowing from. We used paper plates and playdough as the base, then we made arrows held on with a pin and blu-tac. We marked the plates with North, East, South and West. Some wind vanes worked surprisingly well, others not so well! When we blew on the wind vane, we expected the arrows to point towards our mouths. We learnt that the arrowpoints to wherever the wind is coming from. When we tested them outside, we needed to ensure the compass points were set in the right direction.

We’ve also made rain gauges using plastic bottles and stones which we will monitor over the term to track the amount of rainfall. If you have a peek underneath the school sign in the front garden on Hill Street, you’ll see our gauges waiting to catch the rain!

Questions you could ask your children to support their science learning:

What is a meteorologist?

Can you think of three ways in which meteorologists can measure the weather?

What temperature do you think it is today?
