FOUNDATION
As our last week of Term 3 comes to an end, we reflect back on all the wonderful learning opportunities that have taken place throughout our 132 days in Foundation!
Last week, we couldn’t believe it when a big red fire truck pulled into Saunders Street, and the four firefighters arrived in our learning space. As good communicators, we actively listened to the information they shared with us about fire safety. Did you know that smoke rises up and when we hear the loud smoke alarms ring we…get down low and GO GO GO!
In preparation for our second visit, the firefighters asked us to talk to our families about where a safe place would be just in case we ever have to evacuate our home. We are looking forward to our next visit from the Brunswick Fire Brigade and the opportunity to have a close up look at the fire truck!
As inquirers, we have been looking into the steps we need to take when designing for a purpose. We viewed the fairytale stories “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and “The Three Little Pigs” and discussed the problems in the stories. As designers we are here to solve problems! FLW and FAP received a letter from Goldilocks and the Three Little Pigs asking us to design a new bed and a new house. As curious thinkers, we began the design process by sketching and labelling our designs. We have also made a list of materials we might need to create our designs. We can’t wait to show you our finished designs at the Celebration of Learning on Thursday 14th September.
A big thank you to all the Foundation parents for all your efforts this term, especially with the three dress up days we have had. All the students came to these days in full costumes and accessories, which we really appreciate. We wish you a wonderful and safe holiday break. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday 2nd October.
Thank you,
Leanne and Alex
YEAR 1/2
Who can believe that we are in the last week of Term 3? It has been non-stop within our bustling learning spaces! This week, we are excited for our Celebration of Learning, where we cannot wait to share our prototypes with you and how we engaged entirely in the design process.
This is a friendly reminder that families are welcome into our spaces on Thursday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 and Friday morning from 8:30am, for our Celebration of Learning.
As collaborators, we have had time to create a detailed description of our Birdhouses that explains the process of our design journey. Together with our group members, we were required to reflect on the learning that we engaged in during each of the design phases, beginning with the first phase, ‘Ask’. We also considered the different learning assets such as researcher, communicator, collaborator and thinker, and how we demonstrated these. We are very excited to be sharing this information with our learning community at the Celebration of Learning this week!
Throughout this term, so many wonderful parents have come in and assisted us within our learning spaces. From parents coming in as experts to discuss their varying design professions to parent-helpers coming into our learning space to help us with Literacy and Numeracy. The many parents and families that have assisted on our excursions, community event days and the parents and family members coming in to help us with Science Week and making cookies for Father’s Day. The list is endless. We could not have done all of this without you, so we thank you! It is a testament to our school and school community of the willingness of our families to step in, help and get involved.
Lastly, we sent home an excursion note for our Term 4 Inquiry Unit on Geography, which is on Monday the 16th of October (Week 3 of Term 4), where we will be visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens. Please ensure this is returned by Monday the 9th of October.
As guided by the SunSmart Policy, students are now required to wear hats when playing outside. Please ensure you send your child’s hat with them to school, if you have not already done so. No hat means students will be required to sit under the shaded area in Saunders Yard. Summer uniform is not permitted to be worn until next Term.
We hope you have a restful break and enjoy the holidays! We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 4 on Monday, October 2nd.
1/2 Team,
Alycia Marsico, Vania Sparano and Vicky Karalis.

YEAR 5/6
It is hard to believe that Term 3 is drawing to a close! What a busy term we have had!
In Numeracy, our mathematicians are learning all about chance and probability. We started our unit exploring the language of probability such as likely, unlikely, certain and impossible and identifying real world examples that fit into each of these categories. From there we created a Probability Line where we connected the language to the numerical values. The students determined where on the line our percentages, decimals and fractions went. They were able to make connections between each of the numerical values eg: 10% is the same as 0.1 which is the same as 1/10 or 10/100. We will now create our own experiments using spinners, dice and bingo to test out their knowledge and understanding of chance and probability.
As Inquirers, our mini filmmakers are in the final stages of editing their films. With final touches to filming and additional edits we cannot wait to share with you what they have created. Each group has also been working on making a trailer for their films which we hope to share at an upcoming assembly and our celebration of learning. Keep an eye out for our release date and Film Festival next term!
In Literacy, our students began working on creating their very own websites to promote their inquiry films ahead of our Film Festival. Researching elements of an effective website, they have critically reviewed sites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes to determine their essential features. Our budding filmmakers are now in the process of designing and developing their own webpages to inform and entice audiences. Each website will feature a succinct synopsis, promotional posters, behind the scenes snapshots, cast and crew credits, and critical reviews and commentary.
In The Resilience Project, we delved deeper into our knowledge of Gratitude and sharing this with our peers. Each student started with a sheet of paper that was then shared around amongst their class. The task was to write a positive message about why you are grateful for that person. In the end, each student walked away with an abundance of gratitude statements from their peers. It was so lovely to see the bright happy smiles and laughter on our students' faces after this session. We have all learnt a valuable lesson in being kind and being more proactive in sharing our compliments with each other. It is guaranteed to make their day!
Don’t forget we have our celebration of learning this Thursday the 14th of September. It is an opportunity to see some of the amazing work our students have completed this term. We look forward to seeing you there!
Have a fantastic week and a restful holiday break,
See you all in Term 4!
