Cat with Red Fish - Year 8 Art

Henri Matisse (31 December 1869 - 3 November 1954), one of the undisputed masters of 20th century art, was a French artist, known for his use of colour and pattern and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. His mastery of the expressive language of colour, pattern and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Matisse was a big cat fan; he was photographed with his feline friends often. He spent the last few years of his life bedridden with illness, this is perhaps why he spent so much time with his cats. A lot of Matisse’s paintings also have goldfish in them as well as cats.

These are a few of the Year 8 Art class interpretations of ‘The Cat with Red Fish’ by Matisse 1914.
