Celebrating Multicultural Day was a great opportunity for students to share their own family heritage and learn about other countries.
There were many costumes, and the highlight of the day was the shared lunch - soooo many yummy treats. It was good to see students trying new foods.
Thank you to all those families who contributed to our celebrations.
In Art classes throughout the week, students traced and cut out their hand, then decorated it to represent the countries of their family’s heritage.
MULTICULTURAL DAY
As part of our Multicultural Week celebrations we sent out a survey to gather information about the countries of heritage represented in the BPS community.
Collating the data has been extremely interesting. Here are some of the facts we have discovered.
99 families returned the survey, and this is where we collected our information.
63 countries are represented
Countries of heritage divided into continents
EUROPE - 28
ARFICA - 3
ASIA - 22
NORTH AMERICA - 3
SOUTH AMERICA - 1
OCEANIA - 8
ANTARCTICA - 0
When did our families first arrive in Australia?
11 families with children born overseas
21 families whose children are the first generation born in Australia
11 families whose children are the second generation born in Australia
45 families whose children are the third generation born in Australia
6 families whose ancestors have been born in Australia for four or more generations
85 families can trace their heritage back to the United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales)
We would love to be able to add to this data so, if you have not already returned the survey, please complete it and return to school.
The family stories which were shared on the survey are fascinating. They will be collated and shared (without names) at a later date.
National Simultaneous Storytime was on Wednesday 21st May.
It is an annual event hosted by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) where a picture book is read simultaneously across Australia.
In 2025, the chosen book is "The Truck Cat" by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell. The story was told in different ways - reading, online read aloud, Auslan reading.
In the Art Room students drew their own version of Tinka, the cat in the book. There were some terrific drawings, here is a sample.
