Year 11 Arabic Class Excursion

Journey Through Cultures

On the 27th of October, our first year 11 Arabic class went on an excursion to the Immigration Museum to see Fam, the latest exhibition from the photojournalistic project, Where are you from? Fam explores Australian cultural identity, addresses the complexities of familial relationships and seeks to redefine the conventional so-called Australian family portrait.

The themes explored in Fam can also be seen in our wider school community and thus, they tie into the college's educational program. Students had a fantastic time at the exhibition; exploring various cultures gave them the chance to develop their awareness and understanding. It helped them appreciate the concepts of global citizenship and multiculturism. During this event, students encountered stories showcasing the challenges and successes faced by immigrants.

The excursion encouraged students to reflect on their own cultural backgrounds and family histories. Students also found opportunities to demonstrate their Arabic language skills, they were able to teach museum staff some common Arabic expressions. We were told Craigieburn Secondary College is the first public school to send an Arabic class to visit the museum.
