What Did You Do At School?

Prep
The Prep students have made an enthusiastic start to Term 4. They have been exploring duration and sharing equally in Mathematics. In Integrated Studies, the students are enjoying the opportunity to be creative. The warmer weather comes with lots of sandpit play and enjoying the sun. The students are excited and a bit apprehensive about learning their parts and preparing to perform in the Prep Nativity.
Year 1
Adventures in the Barn
Each fortnight, our Year 1 students venture to The Barn for hands-on learning experiences. This term, they are exploring the fascinating world of Weather. This week, students discovered the different types of clouds and where they can be found in the sky. Using their specially made Cloud Finders, they eagerly observed the heavens to identify cirrus, cumulus, and stratus clouds. What clouds can you see in the sky today?
In Reading, Year 1 students have been learning how to Activate their Knowledge before reading a text. This strategy has sparked rich, thoughtful discussions and allowed students’ curiosity and understanding to shine. It has been a joy to see their passion and God-given wonder for learning come alive in the classroom!
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
Psalm 19:1
Year 2
We’ve started Term 4 with lots of excitement and our Late Night Stay! In our lessons, we’ve been exploring the concept of time and have enjoyed writing “I like... I don’t like” poems. One of the highlights from our first week was creating models of different foods during Integrated Studies. In Christian Studies, we’ve been learning about the fruits of the Spirit, and we thoroughly enjoyed making a small poster for our portfolios.
Look at some of our amazing poems!
I like delicious milkshakes,
But
I don’t like getting a brain freeze.
William Z
I like sweet golden marshmallows,
But
I don’t like burnt black marshmallows.
Hazel D
I like rice
But
I don’t like rice with yoghurt.
Arshan B
I like amazing steak
But
I don’t like yuck snails.

Year 3
Adventure Awaits: Highlights from the Year 3 Sleepover
Excitement filled the air on Friday 17 October as our Year 3 students took part in their very first school sleepover. It was a full day and night of fun, learning and new experiences.
Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of engaging activities. These included a scavenger hunt, mini golf, oval games and memorable encounters with Australian animals. There was plenty of laughter, teamwork and curiosity as students explored and played alongside their classmates.
In the afternoon, students set up their sleeping areas with mats and sleeping bags, transforming classrooms into cosy sleepover spots well before bedtime.
In the evening, everyone came together for a shared pizza dinner and a movie to relax. Later, torches were switched on for a peaceful night walk around the school grounds, providing a calm and reflective end to a big day.
When it was finally time to rest, students settled into their prepared sleeping areas. For many, it was their first time sleeping away from home with friends, marking an important step toward independence.
The Year 3 sleepover was a wonderful introduction to the overnight camps that begin in Year 4. A big thank you to all the staff who helped make this special event possible. It was a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Year 4
Our writing focus the last few weeks has been all about poetry! Last week we tried our hand at some free verse poetry, experimenting with structure, onomatopoeia, and creating feeling. So sit back, perhaps with a cup of tea, and enjoy some of the poetic words of the Year 4 cohort.
Autumn Poem
Red.
Orange.
Brown.
Leaves are falling without a sound.
Goosebumps approaching my arms.
Autumn. It's here.
There's no alarm.
Playing in leaves with pride,
watching. Watching them collide.
Feel the breeze come up your spine.
Whoosh!
What's falling is sticks and twine.
Watching leaves blow. Looking out my window.
Winter is on it's way.
It's coming, with no delay.

Summer
It is the first day of summer.
The sunrise right in my face.
The heat of the sun on my clothes.
A drop of water slides on my face.
It is the first day of summer.
Muan Sang N (4D)
Rain
The sun was gone.
The sky darkened,
Angry clouds striking down thunder,
To warn us it will rain soon.
Umbrellas up,
People running to shelter,
Then the rain started,
Pouring down.
Splattering on the ground,
Like firecrackers striking up the sky,
Every single drop,
Felt like the sky was crying.
People ran home.

Autumn Poem
When it’s Autumn
Kids are shivering
While playing
In the leaves
Natural colours,
Red, orange and yellow,
Falling off, like a cloud fading
But with colour.
The wind howls
But still,
Just right to handle.
Sunlight sometimes shines,
Directly on the leaves,
Making it beautiful,
For you to see.

Seasons
Autumn is when
The leaves say goodbye
Knowing the world
Is about to turn blue.
Winter comes and
Asks the leaves to leave
And puts the clouds above
To protect Earth as the world slumbers.
Spring comes
And the leaves say hi
The birds sing
The magpies swoop and zoom
The new era comes.
Summers here and gives
The world a big hug
Christmas comes
And so does a New Year.

Year 5
Term 4 has started with a bang in Year 5! During the first three weeks, we have been exploring the topic of leadership and how we can demonstrate it every day.
Mrs Liddle spoke to us about leadership qualities and inspired us to think about how we can serve others. In week two, we attended the Lead It excursion. In teams of six, we completed a variety of tasks that challenged our communication and collaboration skills. As part of the incursion, we took a personality test and discovered whether we are a turtle, octopus, dolphin, or shark. We learned that all personality types have strengths and weaknesses, and that understanding these is key to being an effective leader.
To finish our leadership investigation, we participated in an egg drop challenge. Working in teams, we built contraptions to protect our eggs when dropped from a height of three metres. Through this activity, we realised the importance of clear communication, inclusivity, humility, and encouraging one another.
Year 6
Festival of the Arts was an invigorating experience, that gave valuable performance practise. It was truly amazing hearing the Royal Australian Navy Band play. We saw what we could achieve if we rehearsed. Performing in windy weather was a unique challenge, we learnt to adapt to having to quickly peg our music to the stands every time we turned the page.
Another part of the Festival of the Arts, was seeing the amazing artwork created by our own Oxley students. All students were given an opportunity to enter into the art competition, where our categories were Prep to Year 2, Year 3 to Year 6, and teacher, parents and alumni. A Winner and Runner Up chosen for each section, and the public had the chance to vote for their favourite artwork. The artwork was astronomical, it told stories words couldn’t, and the winners were awarded ribbons and prizes.
We were grateful that the school was generous enough to pay for food trucks to come! There were delicious free cups of coffee and hot chocolate. There was also an ice cream truck that sold ice cream, sorbet, smoothies and fruit salad. For food there was a truck that sold burgers, fish and chips and much more. There were even some vegetarian and vegan friendly options. In conclusion, the Festival of the Arts was amazing. God blessed us with such a remarkable event filled with fun, laughter, magnificent music, astronomical art, fantastic food, tantalising treats and precious practice.
