A Memorable Week in Canberra

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time with the Year 5-6 students on an unforgettable excursion to Canberra. The capital city of Australia, rich in history and culture, provided the perfect backdrop for a week filled with learning, exploration, and fun.

From the moment we arrived, there was an electric atmosphere of excitement. The students were buzzing with anticipation as we visited iconic landmarks such as the Australian War Memorial and Questacon. Watching their faces light up as they engaged with the exhibits was a highlight for me; it was clear that the experience was igniting their curiosity about our nation’s history and artistic heritage.

One of the most memorable moments for me was our time at Parliament House. The students had the chance to meet our federal representative, Barnaby Joyce at the end of the tour was a highlight. However, their insightful questions during the tour revealed their growing understanding of civic responsibility and the importance of participation in democracy. I was genuinely impressed by their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, and it reminded me of why educational excursions are so vital for young minds. But I have a funny feeling that most of the students will remember the time that they rolled down the grassy hill on the side of Parliament House.

Of course, it wasn’t all about serious learning! We also had plenty of fun activities to balance out the educational experiences. From team games at our accommodation to evening group discussions where students could reflect on their day, each moment was filled with laughter and camaraderie. It was heartwarming to see friendships blossom and students support one another in activities they might have found challenging.

Now, as I reflect on this incredible trip, I’ve realised it’s time to shift gears and prepare for our next adventure—the Year 3-4 excursion to Lake Keepit and Recreational Centre happening next Thursday! I am relieved that the bus trip will be shorter and we are leaving the school at a reasonable time of 9.00am. It looks like we are going to have an action-packed two days and I cannot wait to test my archery and canoeing skills. It is definitely going to be a lot of fun!

In a further section of this newsletter, you will find an additional summary and photographs from the Canberra excursion.

Transition Graduation

Tuesday marked a significant milestone for our thirteen transition students as they celebrated their graduation and are now poised to begin Kindergarten in 2025. Congratulations to Alistair, Archie, Cohen, Daisy, Dusty, Finn, Jack, Lacey, Matilda, Miley, Patrick, Poppy, and Riley on this remarkable achievement. Regrettably, due to various commitments, I have only been able to spend a limited amount of time with each of you; however, I have been thoroughly impressed by the progress you have made in your writing, numeracy, and craft skills during this period. It is evident that you are all well-prepared for the challenges of Kindergarten. We eagerly anticipate your full-time enrollment with us next year. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mrs. Hoy and Mrs. Makeham for their leadership in the program, as well as to all the parents and grandparents who participated in the graduation ceremony.

Staffing for 2025

An announcement was made last week to our transition families regarding the teaching assignments for Kindergarten next year, indicating that Ms Wilson will be teaching for four days and Mrs. Hoy for one day. Additionally, I have received inquiries from several families concerning the classroom arrangements for the upcoming school year. I am in the final stages of finalising these arrangements and anticipate being able to make an official announcement in two weeks. I can confirm at this time that we will maintain the same class structure, consisting of four operational classes.

Remembrance Day

On Monday, Angus, Lilah, and I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Walcha War Memorial, commemorating the conclusion of World War I and honouring the sacrifices made by the men and women who dedicated themselves to safeguarding our nation. I commend both Angus and Lilah for their exemplary representation of St. Patrick's Primary.

Leadership Structure for Year 6 Students

The positions are as follows:

  • School Captains: 2 students
  • Sports Captains: 2 students

This year there will be a change in the school leadership protocols. In keeping with the times, the students will vote on a candidates ability, character and commitment to the roles rather than their gender. This approach ensures that all students have an equal chance to be considered, recognised and valued for their strengths.

Thank you for your support in fostering a respectful and inclusive environment where all students can thrive as leaders.

2025 School Leadership Speeches and Election Day

Several of our Year 5 students have commenced the preparation and practice of their speeches in anticipation of the 2025 School Leadership Speeches and Election Day, scheduled for Wednesday, 27th November.

I would like to thank all of our Year 5 students who have nominated themselves to fill these positions if elected. I know all of you would do a fantastic job!

Year 5 speeches will commence at 9.30am in the library and parents are invited to join us. After the speeches, all students and staff members will then cast their votes. Our 2025 School Leaders will be officially announced at our End of Year Presentation Night.

Beach to Bush Workshop

Last Friday, students from Kindergarten to Year 4 took part in the “Beach to Bush” workshop, an engaging program designed to teach young students about beach safety, coastal ecosystems, and the importance of being responsible near water. This interactive workshop, led by professional lifesavers, brought vital beach safety knowledge to our school, ensuring that students gain the skills to stay safe around the ocean, rivers, and lakes.

The “Beach to Bush” program is one of the most popular and trusted beach safety education initiatives in Australia. Created by Surf Life Saving Australia, the workshop aims to reach students in rural and urban communities who may not have regular access to the beach but still need essential water safety knowledge. By bringing lifesavers directly into schools, “Beach to Bush” delivers important lessons on how to enjoy the water safely and responsibly.

The students were thrilled by the interactive elements of the workshop, particularly the opportunity to engage with real-life lifesavers and see the equipment they use up close. They loved the fun, hands-on activities, with many students excitedly sharing what they learned about rips, waves, and beach flags. The lifesavers were wonderful at connecting with the students, making the experience both educational and highly enjoyable.
