Busy Term Ahead!

We are looking forward to a busy and engaging term filled with exciting learning opportunities across all areas of the curriculum.

Literacy

Students will be completing a genre study on information reports. They will move through the full writing process, including brainstorming ideas, researching, note-taking, and publishing their own informative texts and posters.

In reading, we will focus on comprehension strategies such as inferring, visualising, identifying cause and effect, and comparing and contrasting texts. Students will also participate in Readers' Theatre to build fluency and expression.

Our phonics and spelling program will continue alongside Literacy, with a focus on sound patterns such as oa, ow, ar, ir, ur, or, er and consonant patterns like pp, rr, wr, ss, and tt, supporting students’ reading and writing development.

Families can support Literacy learning at home by:

Reading together each night and discussing the text.
Asking questions such as, “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why did that happen?”
Encouraging children to share interesting facts from books, television programs, or everyday experiences.
Looking for the focus sound patterns in books, signs, packaging, or shopping lists.
Supporting students to practise spelling words and use them in sentences.

Numeracy

Our main focus will be on multiplication and division, where students will develop their understanding of number patterns, strategies, and problem solving skills. We will also explore fractions, location in space, and probability. Students will be supported to build fluency and confidence, and we encourage continued practice of times tables at home.

Families can support Numeracy learning at home by:

Practising times tables regularly in fun ways, such as flashcards, songs, or games. One game that we love at school is Get out of my house!
Using everyday situations to discuss fractions, such as cutting food into halves or quarters.
Asking children to help count, group, or share items evenly.
Talking about probability using words such as likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible.
Playing board games or card games that involve counting, strategy, or recognising number patterns.

History

Our unit, Cultures of the First Peoples of Australia, will explore creation stories, experiences of first contact, historical sources and artefacts, and differences in cultures. Students will apply their learning through a project-based task.

Families can support learning at home by:

Visiting the local library to borrow books about First Peoples cultures and histories.
Discussing the importance of respecting different cultures and traditions.
Exploring maps of Australia and identifying different places and communities.
Encouraging children to ask questions about artefacts, photographs, and historical objects.

Wellbeing

Students will participate in lessons focused on stress management and help-seeking strategies. They will learn calming techniques, ways to manage challenges, and how to seek support when needed. These lessons aim to build resilience and emotional awareness.

Families can support Wellbeing learning at home by:

Talking openly about feelings and emotions.
Practising calming strategies together, such as deep breathing or mindfulness.
Encouraging children to identify trusted adults they can go to for help.
Discussing ways to solve small problems and manage challenges calmly.

Specialist Subjects

Performing Arts

Students will be exploring how to play a range of instruments, including the drum-kit, ukulele, guitar and keyboards. They will be reading from conventional notation and graphic scores and focusing on playing in time with other performers.

Physical Education

Students will use elastics to continue developing their balance and jumping skills. They will also explore basic strategies used in games and sports, such as making space and positions.

Science

Students are beginning to look at earth and space science, investigating how water is an important Earth resource that originates from various sources and exploring how water cycles through the environment.

Visual Arts

For the Hero’s Gallery at Art For All, inspired by Vincent Namatjira, students will create a “Hero” work using watercolour pencils. They will detail it with stitching.

Students will also creatively work with fabric and fibres, developing their sewing, knotting, weaving, and dyeing techniques.

French

Bonjour tout le monde! I'm Kristen, your new French specialist teacher from Canada and I’m so excited to get started with everyone this term! This term our Year 3 students are using French to share information about themselves and their world, building a personal project step by step each week.
