Health Day

Wollert Secondary College had the pleasure of hosting a ‘Health Day’ Tuesday 10th September, we were lucky enough to have many external presenters come by, including ‘Black Dog Institute’ talking about mental fitness. Their presentation is designed for students from school years 7 – 12. This presentation is delivered by our trained lived experience youth presenters who have been trained to share their experiences with mental fitness techniques and interact with students to help them learn all about it.

They learnt about:

  • The definition of mental fitness and core strategies to build mental fitness.
  • How social connection can positively or negatively impact mental fitness.
  • Strategies to build positive social connections with others.
  • Signs that a friend is/might be struggling with their mental health.
  • Ways to help a friend who might be struggling with their mental health.
  • Steps to start a conversation with a friend you are concerned about.
  • Resources to support their own and others mental health and wellbeing.

Banyule Community Health ran a Gaming to Gambling session, their school education programs aim to raise awareness of the normalisation of gambling through sport and online platforms and to provide students with the knowledge and skills to develop healthy and informed attitudes towards gambling.

The Youth Resource Officer/ Police Officer who had the year 8’s participate in marshall arts/ self- defence, what a phenomenal experience it was. Then the Wellbeing team ran Healthy Habits which included ‘hand washing’ in the form of glitter, sleep hygiene sessions, mindfulness art and eating. ‘Healthy Choices’ session spoke about nutrition and specifically looked at soft drink and energy drink consumption.

And lastly for the active part of the day, the students got to experience a bootcamp challenge run by our brilliant P.E team and lastly Reclink who ran a round robin for the kids to participate in sport and keep them active. Such a fun and fabulous day for all.

Thank you to all involved!
