Today, as I write this, it is World Refugee Day. World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on 20 June and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
This term, as we have discussed stories of courage, challenge and growth, the stories of refugees has been a key theme.
In our Year 12 MAX program, students have had the chance to learn from the stories of refugees in developing countries across the world.
We are also excited that on Friday of Week 10, these students will have a chance to act upon what they have learned in our first ever Relay for Change Event.
This event will place in front of Year 12 students, a series of obstacles designed to promote awareness and empathy. Students will be enacting their learning about good vs bad aid by raising funds to support the education of refugee children in East Africa.
This is a powerful reminder of the care that our God has for the poor and for the vulnerable. Jesus himself was forced to flee from his
birth town of Bethlehem to Egypt, spending his early years as a refugee.
Today, every $26 raised can send one child to school for a year.
So, if you see a Year 12 student, I'd encourage you to ask them what they've learned, and how you can donate.
More information on this event can also be found here.
