Colour Recognition

Glen McKinnon Educational Team

At Glen McKinnon Kindergarten we have been settling into the kindergarten year by learning about friendships, emotions, and how these concepts closely link to colours.

Colours are one of the first things we learn about as children as it is easily observable, but there is so much we can do with this learning. As educators we are experts at finding fun and engaging ways to learn important and valuable lessons. We have used 'colour' as a starting off point; to discuss multiple cultural experiences which are celebrated by the diverse families at Glen McKinnon. Additionally, using colour, we can learn about emotions and explore how we feel - a life skill that children will use throughout their life.

At Glen McKinnon, it is important to us that we work together as a service to implement a cohesive program across over 150 children who attended throughout the week and each day we have catered the learning to the individual needs and interests of children.

In a world where hues dance and play, the children have embarked on a chromatic journey this term. With curious hands and imaginative minds, they’ve delved into the art of colour creation, transforming simple prime colours of playdough into a vibrant tapestry of orange sunsets, green meadows, royal purples, and eventually, the earthy tones of brown.

The children's emotions are painted in every shade, they’ve discovered the language of colours, where feelings are not just felt but seen. Through tales spun with colourful threads and melodies that paint rainbows in the air, they’ve learned lessons wrapped in the spectrum of life.

Celebrations like the Lunar New Year, Harmony Day, Holi, Persian New Year (Narwuz) and Easter have woven a rich fabric of traditions, each festival a brushstroke adding depth and joy to their canvas. Embracing the kaleidoscope of cultures with open hearts, they’ve painted their world with the enthusiasm of a thousand colours.

Artistic expressions have bloomed like flowers in spring, from the chatter of paper chatterboxes to the fiery breath of Chinese dragons. Yet, among all, the creation of butterflies has captured their hearts the most. Born from the marriage of coloured water and paper towels, these winged wonders emerged, mirroring the delicate butterflies that flutter freely in their garden.

As the paper towels dried, resembling the wings of these gentle creatures, the children (our young artists) watched in awe. The yard, a stage for nature’s own ballet, became a source of inspiration, teaching them that art and life are but reflections of each other, each butterfly a reminder of the beauty that lies in transformation and growth. 🦋🌈
