Glen Education Brady Road

Curriculum Goals

Yan Li, Early Childhood Teacher

At Glen Brady Road Kindergarten, our core curriculum goal in term 1 is to support children to settle into kindergarten environment and make connections with peers and educators.

When children feel safe, secure and supported, they grow in confidence to explore and learn. We have been supporting children to engage through a variety of learning experiences (indoors and outdoors) and offering opportunities to form relationships in a variety of play experiences.

Children come to know themselves through relationships and interactions, play is an important part of this for children. As we have goals our families do also, this then forms a base for our observations. Many of these goals are around friendships, sharing and self help skills.

We have chosen to share a learning story, which articulates how we link our curriculum goals and family goals into our thinking.

The reason why we choose this learning story is that these children have come to together with a common interest and an idea. They feel secure and comfortable in their environment to connect with each other and explore the resources. Communication is not just verbal but through body language as they both use their imaginative and creative skills whilst demonstrating cooperative skills.

We have been supporting them to settle through a variety of learning experiences, offering opportunities to engage in a small group play. I noticed that Darcy and Liam, for example,  spent time playing together to create a scene of mountains and water by using colourful flat wooden blocks.

Through this experience both look secure and comfortable and are beginning to make connections. They express their ideas through visual artwork. They are developing cooperative play skills, sharing ideas, turn-taking, problem solving through matching similarities and differences.

Early Years Learning Framework (2022) outcomes are supported through these types of experiences, in particular:

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of belonging.

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators

The Early Years Learning Framework (2022) states , 'The collaboration of educators, families and children support and enhance children’s connections and capabilities, and for children to actively participate as citizens.'

At Glen Brady Rd Kindergarten, we value our relationships with our families. Children thrive when they, their families and their educators work together in partnership to support their learning, development and wellbeing.
