Shared Learning through the Community Library

Glen Caulfield Primary Kindergarten Educational Team

All Glen Education kindergartens have a community library at the entrance of the kindergarten, with the purpose of fostering rich literacy experiences at both the kindergarten and at home. 

As a bilingual kindergarten, we have both English and Japanese books available in the library to borrow.  Families have asked, 'What happens if my child wants to read a Japanese book, I cannot read Japanese and my children cannot read Japanese."

If your child is interested in the print from other languages, we encourage you to support this interest.  It is fantastic that children are curious about taking Japanese books home (or any). 

Here are some examples of what you can do to facilitate a language learning - this can be applicable to any language learning. 

Share children's curiosity - "I wonder what this means? What does it say? Shall we look up together?"

Discuss about what each page may mean - guessing what it may say based on the picture is a great way of combining the visual cue to the storyline.

Ask children if they have seen the same letter somewhere - This encourages children to look letters at kinder, in the book, primary school, even at a restaurant.

Also consider - How would I respond to my child, if this were in your own language? Would you say you don't understand and leave it? or would you encourage children to try?

Finally, read together - this makes a reading activity as a special bonding time for you and your child.

コーフィールド・プライマリー・キンダーガーデンのご家族の皆様、こんにちは。キンダーの玄関ホールにコミュニティ図書館があるのを知っていますか？この本棚から本を借りることは大歓迎です。*日本語の本には「Glen Education」のラベルが貼ってありますが、英語の本には貼ってありません。この図書館は、みなさんの信頼のもとで設営されています。以下のことをお勧めします：📕本を大切に扱う。📗貸出期間は1週間とする。📘借りるときは1回につき2冊まで（どの本を借りたか覚えやすくするため）📙日本語の本は日本語の棚に、英語の本は英語の棚に置くようにする。ご理解とご協力をお願いいたします。「私は日本語が読めません。子どもが日本語の本を借りたいと言っているのですが、どうしたらいいですか？"そうですね。一朝一夕に言語を習得した人はいません！子どもたちが日本語の本を持ち帰ることに興味を持つのは素晴らしいことです。どんな言語学習にも応用できます。子どもたちの好奇心を分かち合う - 「これってどういう意味だろう？なんて書いてあるのかな？一緒に調べてみようか？"各ページの意味について話し合う - 絵を手がかりに何が書いてあるか推測することは、視覚的な手がかりとストーリーを結びつける素晴らしい方法です。また、同じ文字をどこかで見たことがあるか、子どもたちに聞いてみるのも一つの手です。もしこれがあなたの母国語だったら…。私は子どもにどう答えるだろう？わからないと言ってそのままにしておくか、それとも子どもたちにやってみるように勧めるかを考えてみると良いかもしれません。最後に、一緒に本を読みましょう。これは、読書活動を親子の特別な絆を深める時間にします。お役に立てれば幸いです！ 素敵な週末をお過ごしください！
