From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 Families!

We have hit the ground running this term, as usual, and the children have settled in very well. We cannot believe that we are in our final term of the year.

It is so nice to have the weather warming up. Please make sure your child has a water bottle at school and they have a school hat that has their name on it.

In Reading and Writing, we have loved using Julia Donaldson’s books as inspiration for our learning. Julia’s books have been very entertaining to read and have been a fabulous platform for our Fiction Narrative Writing pieces.

In Mathematics, the children were really into learning about money and using this in practical situations. We posed many real-life situations where the children had to problem solve and come up with different combinations for a money amount. They were really clever too with working out the change they would receive. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be looking at addition and subtraction, using the skills of counting on and counting back on a number line. We will be exposing the children to the concept of finding the nearest multiple of 10/100/1000 to use the jump 10/100/100 strategy.

In Religion, we have been exploring the Creation Story. We have loved singing the song ‘In the Beginning’, by Andrew Chinn and appreciating the world around us. What a beautiful world we live in and we need to make sure we look after it.

Year One will be attending the regular Friday parish Mass on Friday, November 1st. This is All Saints Day. All Saints' Day is a Christian festival in honour of all the saints in heaven. It celebrates and gives thanks to those who have given grace and whose powerful ends have helped to shape human life. It reminds us of all the wonderful people who came before us and showed their love for God in extraordinary ways. As part of this very special day in our religious calendar we are asking all Year One students to dress up that day in religious clothes. This could be as angels, Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the apostles or any of the saints. Dressing gowns and tea towels are very handy items for this type of dressing up. There will also be some outfits at school if you don’t have anything suitable. Parents and friends are always very welcome to attend the weekly Parish Mass with the children.

In Inquiry, our focus is on geography and looking at places on a local scale, along with identifying and describing natural and built features. On Friday, we will be walking down to the Lake to look at all the different natural and built features. Stay tuned for another local excursion we will be putting out shortly to compliment this learning.
