From the Year 5 Classroom
Literacy
In preparation for the ‘Magnify Sandhurst’ project that is being implemented into our classrooms next year, the grade 5 area has been trialling the program. The Literacy Block looks very different and has seen a focus on daily reviews that revises previous lessons work, grammar, handwriting, typing, vocabulary and sentence structure. All classes are reading a class novel called ‘The Last Bear’ and are creating a persuasive letter to address the concerns of polar bear extinction.
Numeracy
We have just finished our unit on grid references and Cartesian co-ordinates. This week we moved on to solving number problems, looking at number patterns and finding the rules for number sequences.
Leadership
This week we have started our kinder visits in preparation for meeting our 2025 buddies in a couple of weeks. It is a great opportunity to meet some of the kinder kids who will be starting Prep next year. Yesterday some of our Year 5s visited Yarrawonga kinder and enjoyed the outside environment; joining in with the kinder kids as they played on the playground equipment, made sandcastles and playing games of chasey and ‘Duck, Duck, Goose’. All Year 5s will have an opportunity to visit one of the kinders in the next 2 weeks and are all looking forward to their visits.
Other leadership opportunities this term include the chance to have a go at running Monday morning assembly or leading Christian Meditation, our Mercy Values Day on 31st October and the Aspire Leadership Day on November 11th.
Sport
Congratulations to all the Year 5s who have represented the school at zone and regional athletics over the past two weeks. Congratulations to our 11-year girls (Lily, Edie, Tippi) who along with Amelie from Year 6 broke the 4 x 100m relay record at regionals last Friday. Good Luck at the State Schools Championships on 6th November girls!!
