Reflection:

As we reflect on the readings from last Sunday's Mass, the 18th Week in Ordinary Time, we're invited to pause and consider what truly holds value in our lives, especially amidst the busy rhythm of school, family, and daily responsibilities.

The First Reading from Ecclesiastes opens with the famous refrain, "Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!" It speaks of the futility of human toil and accumulation. This can feel a little confronting, especially when we're so invested in providing for our families, ensuring our children have opportunities, and building a secure future. We work hard, we plan, we strive. But Ecclesiastes gently reminds us that worldly achievements and possessions, while seemingly important, are ultimately fleeting.

This theme is powerfully echoed in the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus tells the parable of the Rich Fool. The man in the parable works diligently, his land produces a bountiful harvest, and he plans to build bigger barns to store his wealth, believing he has secured many years of ease. Yet, God calls him a "fool" because his life is demanded of him that very night, and all his accumulated treasures become meaningless. Jesus warns us, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."

As parents, we often find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of activities – managing schedules, supporting academic pursuits, ferrying children to various commitments, and perhaps worrying about finances or future plans. It's easy to get caught up in the "doing" and the "having." These readings challenge us to step back and ask: What are we truly building? What treasures are we storing up?
