Father's Day evening plans
Each term, our school houses lead a celebration of their charism. This term, it is Walsh House! Walsh House is named after Father William Walsh, one of the founding priests of our St John's and the only one of our four house names who's still alive. Next Friday is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, and we will be celebrating all things devotion with a liturgy on Friday afternoon.
The Sacred Heart has a special connection to St John as it is said that Jesus and John were like brothers and most certainly the best of friends. It is reported that when Jesus asked John to look after Mary upon his death, John put his ear to Jesus' chest to listen to his heart. The Sacred Heart is often pictured as a burning flame to remind us of the burning love Jesus shares for us.
With our 'hearts on fire', students have begun to collect 'Tinnies for Vinnies' (non-perishable tin items to be donated to St Vincent de Paul. The year five and six students have also just begun a learning cycle about Australia's neighbours. We know that many of our nearest neighbours are experiencing poverty and health issues. This is true for our closest neighbour, Timor. Many of the local people have poor eye health due to the damage caused by the sun as they work long hours in fields to support their families. Walsh House are also collecting non-prescription sunglasses to send to Timor during the upcoming school holidays. If you have any old sunglasses in good condition, please send them into school. Each classroom has a collection basket in their room where you can drop them.
Together we can make a small difference in others' lives.
Getting snapping! This competition opens today! Please see the flyer below for more information. Submissions are open until 31st July - a fun time school holiday activity!
The competition is open for one photo per student.
This year we will be hosting a NAIDOC Gallery Walk at 3:15 pm - 4:30pm on Wednesday, 30th July at school. The gallery will display most of the past 50 years of NAIDOC posters to peruse. The images share the political and social journey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over the past 50+ years. On entry, you will be given a booklet to guide you in the hunt for clues. I wonder what the theme of NAIDOC was in the year of your birth? How many goannas can you find on all of the posters?
We can't wait to see you there!
I just wanted to share that we will be having a guest speaker come to our Fathers Day evening this year. Our school has been working with OneLove Australia this year, and our 3-6 students have all attended their workshops. Our staff have also completed workshops with them. Jamal Elsheikh will host the evening and will be bringing a sports star from the AFL, A League or NBA to support him in delivering a message of kindness through the use of a toolkit to use when confronted by racism.
