Weekend Wrap-Up

It was a strong weekend across the program, with many teams showing great progress, commitment, and teamwork. We recorded several impressive wins, including dominant performances, tight victories, and a number of courageous efforts in matches that didn’t fall our way. Regardless of the result, our players displayed resilience, improved structure, and a willingness to compete for the full four quarters.

There were standout wins from teams across the College, highlighted by big margins in several junior and senior fixtures, disciplined defensive efforts, and improved ball movement. Even in the closer losses, many sides demonstrated clear growth - showing better shot selection, stronger rebounding, and more confidence with the ball. Those who fell short can take pride in their effort and use the experience to continue building towards the final rounds.

A special mention must go to our top squads, who continue to set the standard for the entire program.

1st V

The 1st V delivered a performance full of heart, taking on a strong St Stanislaus’ outfit and pushing them to the end before falling just short, 62–68. Their effort, discipline, and refusal to back down reflect the very best of SPX Basketball. They can be genuinely proud of the way they represented the College.

2nd V

The 2nd V produced one of the highlights of the season, claiming their first win in dramatic fashion, defeating the first‑placed, previously undefeated St Andrew’s 57–56. This result is a testament to their perseverance, unity, and commitment to improvement. Their belief and determination send a powerful message to all younger teams: stay the course, trust the work, and success will come.

5ths Basketball – Parent Match Report

A great effort by all with some notable 3 pointers from Liam and Nick. They ended the first half 15-19 down, but we noted that 5 of the points had landed in the last minute.

A determined side entered the fray in the second half, with strong team work and possession taking the team to 31-19 with about 8 minutes to go. Such was the Pius X zone defence rigor and accuracy, with opposition screens being very capably avoided and with powerful, accurate rebound collections; combined with isolation of the troublesome #79 Redland player with double-ups, that the fouls were 2-8 with 3 minutes to go, and #79 ejected on 5 fouls.

The opposition timeout provided a respite for the hard working team, who still managed to voice encouragement to each other with notes for how to retain the lead, by Sam and Nick. Calm prevailed in the final 3 minutes with the team looking extremely capable in the opposition half, dominating possession and shooting well.

Very hearty handshakes in good sportsmanship directly after the game, and warm smiles to their teammates, and even thanks to their fill-in coach, confirming these quality young men as well-rounded, educated chaps who have already become exemplars of St Pius X.

Basketball Photos - Saturday 21 February - THIS SATURDAY

This week we are trialling team photos at Oxford Falls prior to matches. Please see the schedule below for your team’s allocated time. If you are not present, you may miss the photo. All players are asked to meet in CBC with their coach prior to their scheduled time.

Updated Year 7 Basketball

Thank you to all the families who have already completed the Year 7 Basketball registration in Clipboard, your prompt action is greatly appreciated. A reminder that registrations will close on Monday 23 February.

We ask families to please stay tuned for further updates. We have recently been contacted by the three opposing schools involved in our planned preseason series, and unfortunately, they have indicated they may not be able to commit this year. We have run this initiative successfully for over five consecutive years, so we are currently working to adjust the original program.

As a result, there may be changes to dates, opponents, and venues. We are doing everything we can to provide the best possible experience for our Year 7 players, and we will keep all families informed as details are confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.

Final Message of the Week

This Saturday marks the final round of the regular season, and I want to sincerely thank all families for your involvement, commitment, and support throughout the term. Your presence each week, running the bench, assisting with logistics, and encouraging our players, has made a tremendous difference.

Best of luck to all teams still in contention for finals.

Please note that training schedules for next week may be adjusted based on which teams progress to the semi finals. We will aim to have as many teams training at school as possible, and updated schedules will be shared once results are confirmed.

A reminder to carefully check fixtures for this weekend. There have been several changes across the draw, and a number of teams have byes. Please ensure you review the updated schedule closely.

Thank you once again for your continued support of SPX Basketball, and best of luck to all teams this Saturday.

Saturday 14 February 2026 – ISA Round 9

1st XI  6 for 207 (Rohan Chang 86, Oliver Freeman 52, Toby Moran 41, Viaan Singh 17*) defeated Oxley College 10 for 61 (Jack English 4 for 13, Lucas Gleeson 2 for 6, Alex Burke 2 for 8, Charlie Chippendale 2 for 8)

Losing the toss and being asked to bat on a wet morning at Oxford Falls, Rohan Chang continued his good form compiling 86, while being ably support by Toby Moran (41), Toby making his return to the 1st XI after injury. Both batsmen played shots to all parts of the ground in their 126 run partnership. Oliver Freeman, scoring 52 from 49 balls, added highlights with some big hitting, while Viaan Singh (17 not out) played an important supporting role.

The 1st XI finished their 50 overs at 6/207. Opening bowlers Jack English (4 for 13) and Charlie Chippendale (2 for 8) put the 1st XI in a commanding position, taking four quick wickets. Lucas Gleeson’s accuracy was rewarded with a wicket thanks to an outstanding catch by Toby Moran in the outfield. Alex Burke proved difficult to play enabling a quick stumping to Oliver Freeman. 1st XI bowled Oxley out for 61 and secured the ISA Division 1 Minor-premiership and a home semi-final (in two weeks).

Squash

Thankyou to everyone who came to support our players for the first round of the Junior Pennant. I was impressed to see our students there early on the courts warming up before their games. It was a tough round with a skilled opposition, yet our boys did some incredible shots and kept toe to toe with Briars in each game played at Willoughby.

The fifth sets seemed to be the difference. There were some thrilling moments in the final games where Liam Spatola fought hard playing a good tactical game to narrowly go down in the fifth and Jaxon Stanley seemed to just have fun out there. The boys played with the spirit we instil at Pius and I’m proud of their efforts.

Meanwhile at Thornleigh Squash Centre, well done to Cameron Giang, our fearless squash captain, who staunchly plays two games each week. He is a quality player and built momentum to take a win in the second game. Similarly big thanks to Chris Simpson who stepped up into a higher division playing back-to-back games in tough conditions. Your determination to represent the College with pride and effort through the matches was great to see.

Looking forward to training this week.
