Footscray Hospital Visit

On Tuesday the 2 of September Sam, Madi and Mr. Millar had the honour of visiting the newly built Footscray hospital. We were joined by many others including Katie Hall. When we first arrived, we were provided with safety equipment because there was still construction happening at the same time.

We entered next to the emergency department but sadly we weren’t allowed to go inside of it. Unbelievable towering buildings that were surrounded by what they call a Central Green Space. From that area the whole hospital looks magnificent and in our opinion fancy, but with a warm welcoming feeling, so from that perspective we knew that this hospital will be the best one yet. Then we made our way to the Main entrance which was connected to the main Building. With high ceilings and a wavy wood panelling it was an amazingly designed part of the hospital. We made our way to the upper floor that had a jaw dropping view that showed a bird’s eye view of the hospital as well as most of Melbourne.

We entered a patient's room which was so stunning, you would want to be injured just to stay in there. In the rooms it is lit by a significant large window that lights up the whole space giving a nice healing feel. This hospital had many different parts which included a car park building, central green space, commercial building (childcare and office), a research lab, as well as an education centre for the Victoria university, sub-acute building and finally that main hospital. All these buildings were separated by colour and in most parts the colours represented the aboriginal people. Some incredible facts that they mentioned was how there was more than 500 inpatient beds which is 200 more then the other hospital.

The new hospital will treat approximately 15,000 additional patients and enable around 20,000 additional people to be seen by the emergency department each year. So our new hospital is in its final year of major construction with it opening in February 2026.
