2026 Barwon Junior Debating Competition – Round 4

On Wednesday 2nd September, our two Year 6 debating teams hosted Bellbrae Primary and Armstrong Creek Primary in the Library for the fourth round of the Barwon Junior Debating Competition. The topic was that e-bike and e-scooter riders should be over the age of 16.

This was the second of two impromptu rounds, meaning we didn’t know the topic until we got into the preparation room. We had just half an hour to think of all our arguments, examples, team line and rebuttals before arguing our case to the adjudicator and audience.

Chilwell A was arguing for the affirmative. Shayaan was 1st speaker, George was 2nd speaker, Millie was 3rd speaker and Harry was supporting with rebuttals. Chilwell B was arguing for the negative. Liam was 1st speaker, Abbie was 2nd speaker, Felix was 3rd speaker and Lexi was supporting with rebuttals.

They were high-quality debates, with persuasive arguments and rebuttals from each side. Chilwell ended up winning both debates, and Millie and Felix were awarded Best Speakers. The adjudicator commented on our awesome teamwork, rebuttals and manner. Well done to all our debaters, who have put in plenty of preparation and practice to get to this point.

With a clean sweep of the preliminary rounds, both Chilwell A and Chilwell B will now progress to the semi-finals, which will be held early in Term 4. We’ll continue working on our debating skills each week and keep you updated on the results.
