Secondary 9/10

Term 3 

Term 3 has been a busy and exciting term, with plenty of opportunities for our students to shine. We’ve enjoyed Fit for Life, STEAM programs, camp, Showcase and many creative classroom-based experiences. Our athletes have been outstanding, competing proudly in both local and regional events. A big thank you to Riley and Rachael for organising our athletes and football stars, who have represented us with pride.

Our Howman’s Gap Snow Camp kicked off the term. We had a group of students brave the icy conditions for three days of fun. On Wednesday, we had the long bus ride. We unpacked the bus, ate our lunch and then put on our snow gear. The little red minibus took us up the mountain for an afternoon of tobogganing and snowball fights. On the first night, we had a Minute to Win It challenge, which was very funny! On Thursday, we ate a hot breakfast and headed back up the mountain for a snowshoeing hike. This was a very weird experience – it was like having tennis racquets strapped to our feet! We ate lunch at Village Bowl at the top of the hill. We enjoyed the beautiful views and watched lots of kids having their first skiing lesson. In the afternoon, we did team challenges back at the campsite. The favourite activity was trying to throw a ping pong ball into a pipe – this activity lasted well after the camp staff had packed up! After dinner, we settled in for a movie. The top pick was Paddington, and we loved it so much that we started watching the second one too! Snow Camp was incredible, but we think a long day trip might be better for next year!

Melbourne Museum

Students brought our Our Earth, Our Choices unit to life with a visit to the Melbourne Museum. They explored our wondrous planet, habitats and the living things we share it with, while thinking about how we can make responsible choices to care for our environment. Using public transport also gave students a chance to apply their Maths learning, including reading timetables, calculating travel times and managing money. It was a fantastic day of learning beyond the classroom!

Earn and Learn

Our Earn and Learn program has continued to engage our learners. Students have been “paid” for their learning, managing their own bills (like chair and locker rent), receiving fines for not completing classroom responsibilities and earning bonuses for excellent effort. This will all lead into our exciting Market Day. Each class will have a market stall and sell their services or products at Market Day early next term.

9/10 Showcase

As I am writing this, our students are busily rehearsing for our annual 9/10 Showcase, which was held on Tuesday September 8. We have had three workshops with the Circus Nexus staff. These workshops included tricks and skills using hoops, poi, daisy sticks and spinning plates. Our Circus Allstars, Glee Club, 9/10 Band and FFL dancers  also  performed. It was an amazing night!
