P-1 Super Heroes
Literacy
This fortnight, our students have continued to develop their phoneme knowledge, helping students hear, identify and manipulate the individual sounds within words. We have been practising listening for sounds, identifying phonemes and digraphs, and using this knowledge to support our reading and spelling.
Students have also been developing their weekend recount writing. We have been learning how to share an experience in sequence, including what happened first, next and last. Students are encouraged to add interesting details to their writing and use their growing knowledge of sounds and letters to record their ideas.
Foundation students have been focusing on sentence structure. We are learning that a sentence needs to make sense and include a clear idea. Students have been practising building complete sentences and using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
Level 1 students have been learning different ways to “lift” a sentence and make our writing more interesting. Students are encouraged to add describing words, details about where or when something happened, and interesting vocabulary.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we have been building our understanding of Friends of 10 facts. Students have been practising recognising the number pairs that combine to make 10.
We are learning that these facts are useful beyond simply making 10. Students are beginning to use their Friends of 10 as a strategy to solve other mathematical problems, helping them work more efficiently and confidently with numbers.
It has been wonderful to see students developing their mathematical thinking and explaining the strategies they use to solve problems.
We are very proud of the enthusiasm, persistence and growth our Foundation and level 1 students are showing in both Literacy and Numeracy!

Boy didn’t that fortnight fly! Our students have worked very well even with the noisy from the fans drying out our carpets after the super heavy rain. A great work ethic!
In Maths, we have moved from our division topic to subtraction. We have been practicing using number lines and partitioning number to find the difference between two two-digit numbers. I love the effort and enthusiasm I see the students displaying during maths time.
In Writing, we are writing our final piece of information text for this unit. While writing the last piece we worked on it step by step. This time around the students are working on it with less guidance and showing what they remember about how an information report should look.
In Reading, we have just begun reading a picture story book- ‘Under the Southern Cross’ by Frane Lessac. It is an information text about different famous places around Australia and how they can all be found under the southern cross. The students have loved looking at the Southern Cross in image. On the next clear night, if you get a chance to show your child the Southern Cross in real life it will assist them to make great connections to our book.
In Humanities, we continue to learn about the way people lived in the past and the tools and machines they used. It has been great to see the homework coming in. The students have really enjoyed interviewing a family member or older friend and are very keen to share their homework with the class. Not surprisingly, lots of the ‘Then’ experiences are similar. Technology has not been mentioned as a form of entertainment unless you count the radio or the odd TV, unlike the ‘Now’ side of the homework!
