Research shows there are six important skills that help children become successful readers. These are known as the Big Six: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

This week, we are focusing on fluency.

What is fluency?

- Fluency is the ability to read smoothly, accurately and with expression. Fluent readers recognise words automatically, read at a natural pace and use their voice to help bring the text to life.

- Fluency helps children understand what they are reading because they can focus on the meaning of the text rather than working out each word. It also builds confidence and helps children enjoy reading.

You can support your child’s fluency at home by:

- modelling fluent reading yourself

- reading and rereading favourite books together

- reading aloud with expression in English or your home language

- using different voices for characters

- adding sound effects and actions to make stories more engaging

- changing your volume, tone and pace to match what is happening in the story

- listening to audiobooks together and talk about the story.

Most importantly, make reading a fun and enjoyable experience. When children see adults enjoying books, they are more likely to develop a love of reading themselves!

Happy reading!
