Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Our school is participating in this year’s bird count. Senior students in the Outdoor education class began observing different birds in a bush setting. Junior Mason students were very enthusiastic and spotted a baby Noisy Mynah in a tree near the fence line of the senior yard. They also spotted some orange Calendula flowers and blue Cornflowers growing in our garden to attract bees and good bugs.

Lower Junior students have been observing different species of birds in our school grounds. Junior Spence sighted four Noisy Mynahs, nine Rainbow Lorikeets, four Magpies and three Wattlebirds. Junior Martin students were excited to watch a tiny swallow’s head poking out from inside the nest in the undercover area in the Lower Junior yard. They watched the father swallow leave and return to the nest. Junior Martin spotted five Noisy Mynahs, three Rainbow Lorikeets, one pigeon and five blackbirds. We will let you know the final count next week. Students also made easy bird feeders from recycled materials to take home so they can observe birds in their backyards.
