VCE Literature Excursion

As part of their assessment this term, students in the Year 11 VCE Literature class embarked on an excursion to the NGV and Koorie Heritage Trust to analyse First Nations artwork. This was an extension of the work they had completed in class analysing Indigenous Voices in different forms of Literature. These included writings by Ellen Van Neervan, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Jack Davis and other notable authors, as well as perspectives on Indigenous issues from non-Indigenous writers.

The key skills students developed included the ability to distinguish authentic stories from those being told ‘about’ our First Nations people, contrasting the impact of different voices and understanding the messages most important to Indigenous communities. The excursion was a final application of these skills to an unfamiliar stimulus – in this case, Indigenous art.

Tasked with choosing an artwork which spoke to them most strongly, students engaged with two tours led by exhibition curators and discussed the role modern museums have to play in championing Indigenous perspectives and challenging existing stereotypes. Students asked insightful questions, provided interesting answers and in the end, selected varied artworks for inclusion into their Reading Journal.

Upon our return to school, they were excited to further research the artists behind their selected piece and independently produce detailed analysis showcasing their incredible knowledge of Indigenous Australian perspectives. I was extremely proud of the class and cannot wait to explore the themes and ideas further next year as we look forward to Year 12!
