Year 7-9 Production: The Lion King Jr

The Lion King JR is quickly taking shape thanks to staff and students giving up a few weekend dates for additional rehearsals. Here is an image from last weekend’s rehearsal. Featuring in his ‘I Just Can’t Wait to Be King’ debut moment is our Young Simba, played by Year 7 student, Miguel Dunne. Some of you might be able to spot his mother in the shot too!

Students are really starting to see the shape of the show and the excitement is amazing to see.  We are just starting to bring aspects of our set in and so students will get to experience rehearsing with the actual set pieces but also in the space where they are performing which is a superb opportunity for them.

Year 9 and 10 Theatre Studies develop class play

Check out the Year 9 and 10 Theatre classes as they learn how to use the lighting and sound equipment in the new PAC auditorium.

The students are developing a class play of ‘The 39 Steps’, a stage adaptation based on John Buchan’s gripping whodunit, memorably filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935. The play's concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film to be performed with a smaller cast thus the film's serious spy story is given a comedic twist.

This play will be performed in the theatre in Term 4, keep your eyes peeled for ticket information!

South Street ACU Debating Cup

Congratulations to the three teams SPC entered in the ACU Debating Cup which took place earlier this term. Although the two junior teams were unsuccessful in making it through the heats, coaches Jacinta Reidy and Lauren Stevenson were very proud of their efforts in their respective debates. The middle school team did a fantastic job under the guidance of coach Dirk Stickland making it through to the semi-finals after winning their first debate where the topic was ‘That we should be tougher on juvenile crime’. The adjudicator praised both teams for their excellent debating and stated that she had to remind herself these were middle school level students not senior school students! Unfortunately, the team lost in the semi-finals to a strong Ballarat Grammar side but can hold their heads high after making such wonderful progress across the year.

Year 11 & 12 Theatre Studies Excursion – A Streetcar Named Desire

On Wednesday, 7 August the St Pat’s & Loreto VCE Theatre Studies classes went to see Tennessee Williams’ classic A Streetcar Named Desire. A core part of Theatre Studies is analysing and evaluating live theatre, and this moving and important show is now being picked apart in class as students consider how the acting, direction and design communicated meaning to the audience.
