English

Mrs Trudi O'Callaghan, Head of English

Some exciting times ahead as our students begin to make selections for their English moving into Years 10, 11 and 12.

We have a range of extension opportunities for the boys and currently our Year 9 students who have demonstrated excellent performance in English, have been invited to consider Year 10 English Language and Literature.

Many of our Year 10 students have performed well this year and their data has been extensively analysed for our recommendations to study either English, Literature or English Language. This information was discussed at the recent subject selection interviews – if you were unable to attend, please touch base with your son’s English teacher or homeroom teacher to see what recommendations there might be.

At the moment in English classes from Year 7-12 we have the boys engaged in reading and analysing some amazing novels and plays. If you are wondering how you can support your son to achieve a greater understanding of these texts, please read or view the text for yourself and discuss it with him. Often those questions about the characters or the themes are incredibly rich when you both have knowledge in those areas. We also select texts that have important messages about the world, so they can be a wonderful gateway into really rich conversations about what is currently happening around us.

Some of our boys are not bringing their texts to class – often suggesting they have left it at home – if you could please query them on their way out the door as to whether they have packed their novel this will help ensure they are set up for success in their classes.
