Hello, Dunhelen families and friends! It's been a whirlwind week in Dunhelen filled with exciting adventures, educational experiences, and memorable events that have kept our students, staff, and parents engaged.

Year 7 students explore the wilds at Healesville Sanctuary

Our Year 7 students had an unforgettable journey to Healesville Sanctuary, where they delved into the wonders of the natural world. The highlight of their visit was an interactive workshop on food webs and classification, where they gained a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships that exist within ecosystems. To make their learning even more hands-on, our students had the unique opportunity to hold animal skulls, bringing them closer to the creatures they had been studying in class. It was a day filled with curiosity, discovery and lots of smiles!

Year 8 STEM Expo:  A showcase of Young Innovators

The Year 8 students showcased their creativity and scientific prowess at the Year 8 STEM Expo. This exciting event saw our young innovators presenting models, experiments and games, all centered around one of the body's complex systems. Friends, family and teachers were invited to explore the exhibits, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and witness the incredible talents of our Year 8 students. It's evident that the future of STEM is bright in Dunhelen!

Dunhelen Student Leaders attend the Battle for Australia Commemoration Ceremony

Our Dunhelen student leaders alongside the Cumberland student leaders had the honour of attending the Battle for Australia commemoration ceremony held at the Shrine of Remembrance. This solemn event pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the defence of our great nation. Harry D, one of our exceptional student leaders, played a pivotal role by delivering a moving reading based on the HMAS Perth's heroic actions during the Sunda Strait battle. It was a moment of reflection, respect and gratitude for all who attended.

As we reflect on this eventful week, we are reminded of the incredible opportunities for learning, growth and community engagement that Aitken College provides. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and their commitment to making a positive impact within our school and beyond.

Dunhelen Lunch & Learn Hub

As part of our ongoing commitment to the College value of excellence, Dunhelen has implemented the Excellence Program. The program encompasses:

  • a College value of the week for students to focus on plus the opportunity to go into the draw to win a $30 voucher for Student of the Week
  • the Dunhelen Homeroom Daily which contains information about our College values, tips for studying and quizzes
  • The Lunch and Learn Hub which students can attend voluntarily or be referred to by teachers for extra help with their work.

If you have any questions about the program or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant Head of Year or the Deputy Head Secondary, Ms Melissa D'Amico.

VCEVM

On Monday 4 September the Year 12 students organised the ‘Race Around Melbourne’ assessment task in Melbourne’s CBD. They devised a series of challenges, with clues and instructions, to follow. The innovative activity was created specifically for the Year 11 students and allowed everyone to experience the thrill of an ‘Amazing Race’ in our own city. They travelled independently by train or tram and on foot. Competing in teams, the Year 11 students raced against the clock, deciphering clues whilst navigating their way around Melbourne, visiting famous landmarks and various locations. It was wonderful to see the students working cooperatively and supporting each other.

Year 11 Ball

After months of preparation, the Year 11 Presentation Ball took place at the Hyatt in Essendon Fields on Saturday 26 August. Students were divided into three groups and each group learnt three dances that were performed on the night. With great patience, dance teacher, Mr Sebastian Riscica, taught a group of teenagers everything from the waltz, the cha-cha and the tango to the Charleston. At times, we were uncertain if they would ever master those moves, but it all came together beautifully on the night.

The students looked amazing and throughout the entire process, behaved impeccably. Right from the moment they were allocated partners, they adopted the right spirit. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the group come together and get to know members of their year level in a whole new light.

After the formalities of the evening were done, it did not take much for the DJ to get everyone up on the dance floor where students, staff and families could let their hair down and enjoy the rest of the night.

Special mention must go to Mrs Sue Matthews who arranged everything from the venue to the ticketing for the night. I’m not sure how many times I told the students to ‘go and ask Sue’ and she always made sure that their queries and requests were met - with a smile!

The night also could not have gone ahead without the tireless efforts of Mr Victor Salloum who we know loves to arrange and host a big event. I know the students all appreciate your efforts in making the night so special.

This was definitely a night to remember for the Class of 2024.
