Sustainability and Agriculture
Sustainability Week
Sustainability Week was held during the week of 4 to 8 September. The week was designed to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and encourage community practice in sustainability. Activities were held during recess, lunchtime and class time.
Students undertook water testing of Brodie’s Creek, such as turbidity, pH and identification of bugs present to determine if the creek is healthy.
Students learnt about the benefits of nude food and were involved in some taste testing. Melissa Doherty, the biodiversity officer from Hume City Council visited the College to talk to the students about Citizen Science, which helps biodiversity and scientists by collecting data on occurrence and distribution of species using their iPads.
Students got the opportunity to shred the many plastic bottle tops the College has been collecting and turn them into plastic sheets. The sheets are then used to make plastic products.
Students walked around the school grounds collecting native seeds from grasses, trees and shrubs, so we can propagate and replant these seeds in the future (regenerate). Students were also learning about the importance of propagating flowering seeds, which will grow flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and increase biodiversity.
Thanks to everyone who helped during Sustainability week.
