The English Domain has been working hard from Years 7 – 12, establishing subject specific language and learning habits, as well as exploring the concepts of our first units of study.

Students have been working with their teachers on our engaging English Curriculum across the College, from how to understand tropes, genres and create characters in Year 7, to a film study of the hilarious and uplifting ‘Hunt for the Wilder People’ in Year 8, to exploring our ‘Cultures of Communication’ unit in Year 9. In the Senior School, students are studying a range of texts, including the plight of Indigenous soldiers in the play “Black Diggers,” the way in which families are connected over generations in Toni Jordan’s “Nine Days,” and Year 12s are exploring the American Gothic genre with the fascinating text, “We Have Always Lived in the Castle.” Our new Year 10 English Extension class are currently exploring the writing style of the brilliant Markus Zusak in ‘The Book Thief’ and working towards understanding and applying the VCE command term “Analyse” in relation to this novel.

We have also begun our Year 12 “Hour of Power” essay writing practice sessions on Thursdays at 3.20 in the library. Last week a significant number of keen Year 12s attended this session after school to practice their essay writing skills and receive feedback on their work, getting an early start on preparing for their upcoming SAC.

The English staff are also available on Wednesdays in the Holloway Road library for further assistance to senior students.

Mia Du Plooy, from Year 7, has offered her perspective on her experience of English so far in the extract below.

In Year Seven, we have been learning about genres and tropes. The English teachers have inspired us and helped us in our journey so far. We have also been able to write multiple enticing stories based on an image of a match. I wrote a story about a scientist named Chloe who experiments and blows up her lab.
