The Child Safe Standards are at the core of how we operate at Sandringham College.
At the start of the new school year all staff received training in the Child Safe Standards. We conduct this training each year to ensure that we are up to date with any adjustments to the standards and to ensure that we are cognisant of our obligations regarding the safety of students in our school.
The Child Safe Standards
The Standards are compulsory minimum standards for all Victorian schools, to ensure they are well prepared to protect children from abuse. Ministerial Order 870 — Child Safe Standards — Managing the risk of child abuse in schools outlines how the Standards apply in schools.
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) is responsible for ensuring school compliance with the Standards. Schools are required to comply with the standards for registration.
There are 11 standards - please click on the links for further information:
Standard 1: Culturally safe environments
Standard 2: Leadership, governance and culture
Standard 3: Child and student empowerment
Standard 4: Family engagement
Standard 5: Diversity and equity
Standard 6: Suitable staff and volunteers
Standard 7: Child focused complaints process
Standard 8: Child safety knowledge, skills and awareness
Standard 9: Physical and online environments
Standard 10: Review of child safety practices
Standard 11: Implementation of child safety practices
Schools must take account of and make reasonable efforts to accommodate the diversity of all children in implementing the Child Safe Standards, including (but not limited to) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children with disabilities, and children who are vulnerable.
Sandringham College Child Safe Policies are found on the College website
STUDENTS WITH DIAGNOSED MEDICAL CONDITIONS
To ensure that Sandringham College can appropriately support students with diagnosed medical conditions we ask that parents read the information below and provide the information/medical resources required. For any serious medical conditions please ensure that you advise your students Year Level Leader and the College will follow up to ensure that the appropriate actions are taken.
ANAPHYLAXIS/EPIPENS
All students who are diagnosed as being at risk from an anaphylactic reaction must provide the school with an Individual Management Plan from the treating medical practitioner and a current adrenaline autoinjector (epipen).
We ask all parents and carers to ensure that the school has a current Management Plan including an up to date photo of the student and an epipen to be stored in the Admin Office of their base campus in case it is required.

ASTHMA
All students who are diagnosed as being at risk from asthma must provide the school with an Asthma Action Plan from the treating medical practitioner and an asthma kit. The asthma kit should contain the students prescriber reliever medication and their own spacer (if they use one).
We ask all parents and carers to ensure that the school has a current Action Plan and student asthma kit to be stored in the Admin office of their base campus in case it is required.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION - OTHER THAN FOR ANAPHYLAXIS OR ASTHMA
If a student requires medication Sandringham College encourages parents to to arrange for this to be taken outside of school hours. When a student requires medication at school parents are asked to provide a Medication Authority Form from the treating medical practitioner and arrange to deliver the medication to the Admin office of their base campus. Sandringham College will ensure that the medication is administered to the student in accordance with the Medication Authority Form and will keep a record of medication administered.
