Athletics Sports

Our school Athletics Sports were held earlier this term and after a delayed start due to the weather, the event was conducted over the Wednesday (at Mitchell Park for Years 1 to 6) and then on the Thursday at school involving all students.

Students were provided with coaching during Physical Education classes with Mr Watt and Mrs Stewart in the lead up to the various throwing, jumping and running events and it was great to see these improved skills on display.

A highlight of our sports is the whole school coming together for the afternoon session where we all get to see the 5/6 Year Age Group participate in their running events, followed by the year level House relays.  Hearing everyone cheer for their teams, whether they were winning or chasing hard, demonstrates terrific school and House team spirit.

At the conclusion of our sports the points are tallied with Wannon (yellow) being presented the Jack Waldron Shield at our assembly the following week.  Jack, who is a former teacher and Principal at Gray Street and was (and still is!) very passionate about sport, was unfortunately unable to make it this year, but looks forward to returning next year to present the shield named in his honour.

The first three placegetters in each age group for the overall Age Group Champions were also recognised and presented with a ribbon at assembly, as follows:

Unfortunately our medals for those coming in first place haven’t yet arrived and these will be presented at a later date.  Thank you to all staff for their support in running and coordinating various events on the two days of competition, along with the parent helpers and parents who came along to support and cheer on our athletes.

School Netball

The final round of the Hamilton Junior Netball Saturday morning competition will be played this weekend up at Pedrina Park.  It has been terrific to field 5 teams across the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 age groups, involving 42 students from our school.  I’ve been told our participants have been demonstrating great skill and game sense development along with strong sportsmanship.  Having these teams participate would not be possible with the help and support of our volunteers and I’d like to thank the following people for giving their time to support our players.

I’d particularly like to thank Eva and Mackenzie, both students at local secondary schools, for giving their time to support our school through umpiring our two Year 5/6 teams. A final thank you also to Stacey Stewart and Gaynor Bennett for providing me with administration support and sourcing of umpires for our teams.

The next season of netball will be later this year in term 4 when we once again look forward to having Gray Street teams involved.

Hamilton District Sports Association (HDSA) - Athletics

Last week we sent a team of 55 athletes to Mitchell Park to participate in the Hamilton School’s Athletics Sports.  Students in the 9, 10, 11 and 12/13 Year Age Groups qualified for this event through their strong performances at our school Athletics Sports held earlier this term. There were many outstanding performances on the day with all of our students representing our school extremely well.

Three students – Max (9 Year Boys), Georgia (12/13Year Girls) and Jobe (12/13 Year Boys) won their Age Group Champions and were presented with a medal at the conclusion of events, another outstanding achievement.  Students in the 10 Years (combined with the best results from the 9 Years events), the 11 Years and the 12/13 Years who finished in the top 2 of a running event, or first in a relay or field event, have now qualified for the Division Athletics Championships that will be held in Warrnambool on the 1st May.  I am currently reviewing these results and will be sending a XUNO message to families who have a child that has qualified.  Well done to all of our students – a great day for all involved!

Greater Western Region Swimming Championships

On Wednesday of this week we had Sophie in Year 4 participate in the Greater Western Region Swimming Championships that were held in Horsham.  Sophie qualified for this higher level of competition when she won her event, the 10 Year Girls Breaststroke, at the Division Championships held in Warrnambool towards the end of February.  This week Sophie was able to achieve the outstanding result of 6th place overall which is a terrific achievement.  Congratulations to Sophie – we are all very proud of you!

Next Term – Key Sporting Dates:

  • Thursday 30th April – Gray Street Cross Country at Lake Hamilton (2:15pm)
  • Friday 1st May – Division Athletics in Warrnambool
  • Thursday 7th May – HDSA Cross Country at Lake Hamilton
