Inside Classrooms

Cohort and Specialist Updates

Foundation:

On Wednesday June 11, the Foundation Students went on their first school excursion!  After a short bus ride to CERES, students explored the Merri Creek and picked up rubbish to keep it clean.  Students made their own paper from paper and learnt about worms and composting.  The most exciting part of the day was playing on the playground which was made from recycled materials and not like anything seen before.  A great day was had by all.

Since returning to school students have begun composting and set up paper recycling processes for their classroom.  A great term learning about Sustainability was shared with parents in the open classroom event.

Year 1/2:

The students in Years 1 and 2 have had a fun time during Inquiry, learning about all about ‘Water’.

We have all loved learning the water cycle song, which is a very catchy tune and has helped reinforce the stages of the Water Cycle; Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Collection. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experiment of making their own mini water cycles, which we have displayed on our windows, for the students to observe the different stages of the water cycle process up close.

In Literacy, students have used their persuasive skills to create posters to conserve water and in Numeracy, they have been hands on, using water to measure capacity.

Year 3/4:

As Term 3 comes to a close, students have enjoyed a range of rich learning experiences. Athletics Day was a highlight, with students showing perseverance and teamwork across events like running, shot put, long jump and hurdles. Well done to all, and congratulations to those who made it to District! In Literacy, students developed persuasive writing skills by debating whether plastic should be banned and later chose their own topics to argue using emotive and inclusive language. In Numeracy, students explored fractions and measurement - ordering unit fractions and using scaled instruments to measure objects around the school, including the basketball courts with a trundle wheel.

Year 5/6:

It’s been a jam-packed few weeks in Grade 5/6.In Maths, students have been exploring Location, Perimeter and Area. They’ve learned how to plot points using coordinates and understand directions in a grid. As well as using known strategies to solve the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes. In Literacy, students have been working hard on researching and writing explanation texts, using their knowledge from our Sustainability unit. They’ve chosen topics that describe how or why something occurs to inform and educate readers. A big congratulations to all the students who made it through to the final of Interschool Sports in Netball, T-ball and Soccer! Whilst we didn’t win our matches, all students tried their best and it was a great learning experience.

Our recent camp was a highlight of the term! Students had the chance to try new things, challenge themselves, and build stronger connections with their peers. Some of the exciting activities included canoeing, flying fox, camp cooking, orienteering, archery and tunneling. We are so proud of the way our students represented our school values during camp.

                     Garden Together

This term cooking with veggies and herbs from the garden has been a highlight for Grade 3-4. We made some delicious garden fritters and even used the little bantam-sized eggs from our chickens.

While Grade 3-4 were at Athletics carnival students in Grade 1 and 2 enjoyed working in the garden.  We planted seeds,  learnt about the rainwater tank that helps us save water in the garden and harvested carrots for tasting!

Happy winter gardening everyone!
