Upcoming Events:
Year 12 Overnight Retreat: Monday, March 25 – Tuesday, March 26
All aspects of school life are important. I was a good student with excellent attendance and as a result I had a lot of options for tertiary education when I completed Year 12.
When I am with my friends though, we don’t talk about the work we completed at school, we talk about the experiences we shared. Top of the list of experiences are always Retreats.
Next week the Year 12 students will be attending an overnight Retreat at Phillip Island Adventure Resort. There they will have the chance for reflection, prayer, games and time with their friends. Retreats can be transformative for those who attend, if they are willing to enter the experience. They are an opportunity for our young people to grow together and grow individually. I look forward to sharing this special event with our Year 12 students.
Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) Immersion 2024: Wednesday, April 3 – Friday, April 12
Nine Year 10 students, myself and teachers Helen Davine and James Mazzolini will be experiencing the Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) Immersion 2024 during the Easter holiday break. Ltyentye Apurte (pronounced L-ginger Porter) is an Aboriginal settlement of approximately 600 people belonging to the Eastern Arrernte language group, 80km south of Alice Springs.
During our time at Ltyentye Apurte we will be volunteering in the community assisting with meals on wheels, school holiday programs, Keringke Arts and Spirituality Centre. We will be posting updates on Facebook and invite you to follow us during the break.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Group
At Marist-Sion College we have a proud group of 26 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, some who have worked with local Kurnai Elder, Cheryl Drayton to create a football jumper with our own indigenous design. Cheryl has encouraged the students to incorporate Aboriginal symbols into the story of Marist-Sion College. There has been some beautiful work completed which will be produced into our Indigenous Round guernsey. The difficult part will be selecting the final artwork.
Recent Events:
Commencement and Year 7 Welcome Mass: Thursday, February 29
During the Commencement and Year 7 Mass of Welcome the Year 7 students were lead into the Hall by their House Captains and Heads of Houses and the names of every student and staff member were entered into the Marist-Sion Heart.
The Marist-Sion Heart comes from the tradition that St Marcellin Champagnat followed, entering the names of the Marist Brothers who were travelling into a silver heart and having it on display in the community. This symbolised that wherever in the world the Brothers were, they were held in the heart of their community and remembered in their prayers. Similarly, we pray for our students, even when they are not here and we want them to know that Marist-Sion College is a place where they are known and loved.
The Year 12 Jackets were also blessed during the Mass and the senior students were commissioned to wear them as a sign of humility and leadership.
The Mass was a beautiful celebration of the Eucharist for the whole College community.
Year 7 Reflection Days: Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6
The Year 7 Reflection days offered the students an opportunity to learn some more about the Marist and Sion Charisms and to consider the School Wide Expectations of being a respectful, responsible and safe community. We thank Br Tony Clark for taking the time to present to the Year 7 students about his life as a Marist Brother.
