Year 6 News

Life in Year 6

In year 6, we have been doing a lot of math. First, we started graphing. We learnt how different information needs different types of graphs. For example, we did a graph on how many basketball shots each class could make each class got two shots. Here is a photo of the results.

The week after that we did a learning task connected with graphs. The task was that we had to do a graph of the number of things that were in bins when we had drawn the graph, we had answered a set of questions about the graph. We are now moving on to learning about number and place value.

In maths we have learnt a lot. We have especially been learning place value. We have been working on our place value skills. We learnt how 73’636 on an extended number becomes 70’00 + 3’000 + 600 + 30 + 6. AS you can see.

Overall we had lots of fun and learnt a lot.

In art we have been making Greek gods out of cardboard we make them by cutting out cardboard shapes and sticking them onto a base we made some people have been making 3d shapes or scrunching up cardboard then sticking it onto the base to make it pop out.

In year 6 we have been enjoying music! Lately we have been doing a lot of ukulele. We have learnt how to play lots of songs like best day of my life, three little birds and another one bites the dust. We also do a lot of singing. We have sung songs like love story and seven nation army.

Inquiry

On Monday the 4th of March the Year 6 teachers introduced a new task for us students. We had been focusing on our How we express ourselves unit, being Leaders Possess Unique Qualities.

The year level brainstormed about change wanted in different places. These places were; School, Community, Australia and Worldwide. We then picked one change that felt important to us, and everyone had their own change to write about.

We then moved on to note taking. We had to write sentences to answer 5 questions about our topic to create a speech. Before we could do it, we had to create a draft. It took us a few days to finish our first copy before we moved on to the final copy. Everyone was in a massive time crunch since we only had 2 hours to finish, but then, we printed out our speeches, made que cards and finalised our posters.

Everyone did an amazing job at their speeches, and everyone got inspired to make changes about our world and take action.

Literacy

Spelling

Almost every week in term 1 we do spelling and spelling activities. The point of spelling is to improve our grammar and word choice when we speak or write. We choose 10 out 18 words from a certain list of words.
