Year 1 News

Maths

This term, the Year 1 students have been learning through manipulatives and hands on Maths activities.

They have been learning to:

  • represent numbers to at least 120 in a variety of ways
  • partition collections into equal groups using knowledge of numbers and skip counting
  • represent two-digit numbers with base-10 blocks in a place value chart and write the numeral

The students have enjoyed playing the Michael Minas hands-on Maths games in partners and small groups which are designed to reinforce their knowledge of the number system. They have also been playing Maths games during morning circle time such as Buzz and Magic 11.

Inquiry – How The World Works

The students have continued to enjoy learning about the weather in our current unit of inquiry, ‘The weather affects our lives and the environment’.

They have learnt about the different forms of weather, what causes the weather and how weather changes around the world. The students have also been looking at the impact the weather has on our daily life.  They have enjoyed going outside to check the temperature with our giant thermometer and wind direction with their home made windsocks.

Many students have shared their wonderings on the class wonder wall. It is great to see the excitement when one of their questions is answered.

Mia in 1C showed action when she made posters all about the weather to share with her class.  Well done Mia!

Eloise in 1B also took action at home making her own thermometer. Well done Eloise!
