Upper Primary Term 3

Visual Arts Highlights

This term in Art, students built on previous learning experiences while continuing to strengthen core art skills through a focus on First Nations storytelling and the Elements of Art, including line, repetition and value. Students explored how First Nations artists use symbols, patterns and imagery to communicate culture and meaning. They selected meaningful symbols and used drawing, tracing and art-making techniques to create individual artworks. Through plenty of practice, persistence and experimentation, students developed their cutting, shading and line drawing skills while growing in confidence and creativity

Digital Tech

Upper Primary students have continued building their computer skills this term, further developing their ability to log in independently using a username and password, and create informative PowerPoint presentations using text and images. Students have enjoyed using both iPads and laptops to experiment with animating digital artworks.

Music

This semester, Upper Primary students have been developing their creativity through improvisation and musical exploration. Students have spent time experimenting with both tuned and untuned instruments, creating their own rhythms, patterns and musical ideas. They have also begun using GarageBand on iPads to explore digital music-making and discover new ways to create sound. Through these hands-on experiences, students have continued to build their confidence, listening skills and ability to collaborate with others while making music.

PE

This term, students in Upper Primary have been learning about t-ball and tennis, practising motor skills such as a two-handed strike, running, side stepping and a forehand strike. Students attempted to use these skills in a variety of environments, including the gym and on Concord Oval. They practised teamwork and communication in small groups and game settings, working together to achieve success.

Special Olympics also supported our tennis program, with a coach attending some of our weekly sessions and donating new tennis equipment for students to use.

Social Competencies

Throughout the Upper Primary Sexuality Program, students have been learning about their bodies, personal safety and the changes that happen as we grow. This has included exploring public and private body parts, places and behaviours, as well as using respectful and appropriate language when discussing these topics. Students have also explored the different stages of human development, with a particular focus on preparing for puberty and the changes that can occur during the teenage years.

Students have been introduced to menstruation, including what a period is, what to expect and ways to manage menstrual hygiene. They explored different menstrual products, including pads, tampons and period underwear, and discussed how and when these products are used. It has been wonderful to see students developing greater confidence and understanding as they learn about their bodies and how to care for themselves.
