The Olympic history of Bluff Campus

Who knew that the Bluff campus has its own tiny bit of Olympic history?  There were no events held at the site (that we know of), but there is a connection….

Predating the school merger in 1988, the Bluff campus used to be known as Highett High School, and we still have a collection of yearbooks in the college archives from Highett High.  The school was opened in 1956 (albeit without any buildings (buildings were constructed a year later)). The world was ever changing in those years, and the Highett High school crest was designed to reflect this with the inclusion of a jet plane/rocket ship and the motto, “Forward, Upward”.

But there was another huge event in 1956 as the Olympic Games came to Melbourne. What better way to commemorate the opening of a new school in 1956 and the Olympic Games with the addition of the Olympic Rings into the school crest. The combined image above shows the original design of the Highett High crest in 1959, and the redesign of the crest in 1961, both sourced from editions of the Highett High yearbook, Nautilus.
